Meet the New South Salem High School Assistant Principals at Ice Cream Social

(SALEM) - South Salem High School would like to invite the Salem community to meet the school's three new assistant principals, and find out how they will help South continue its tradition of excellence.

The school is hosting an Ice Cream Social on August 24th at 7:00 PM in the commons.

The new assistant principals are:

David Phelps, curriculum assistant principal from Lincoln County School District.

Barton Tumlinson, discipline assistant principal from Scappoose School District.

Lilian White, discipline assistant principal from Iredell/Statesville School District.

Aumsville Police Department Purchases Two Tasers

Aumsville will join several other local agencies that use tasers, a proven and effective tool that avoids the use of deadly force.

(AUMSVILLE, Ore.) - The Aumsville Police Department has purchased two Tasers, and upon completion of required training by department personnel, they will be deployed for use.

Taser devices use proprietary technology to quickly incapacitate dangerous, combative or high-risk subjects who pose a risk to law enforcement officers, innocent citizens or themselves.

Puzzle Fire Grows Monday To Over 35-Hundred Acres

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

(MARION FORKS) - The Puzzle Fire on the Willamette National Forest, two miles north of Marion Lake, which has grown to 3,686 acres, was flown and assessed Monday for tactical action. Crews began constructing line near Marion Lake, utilizing old lines from the B&B fire during 2003.

Improvement of previously constructed dozer lines outside the wilderness on the Puzzle Fire will continue and crews will begin fire suppression activities tying Marion Lake to a lava field south of the fire.

Albany Police Offering Fall Citizens’ Academy

The academy is designed to promote awareness and understanding of the police department’s role in the community and the criminal justice system, and to educate citizens about its daily function and operation.

(ALBANY) - The Albany Police Department is accepting applications for its fall Citizens’ Academy.

The academy will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, Tuesday evenings from Sept. 5th to Nov. 21st at Central Willamette Community Credit Union.

Two Saturday classes are also planned.

The academy is free to Albany residents of all backgrounds and occupations who are 18 or older and pass a criminal background check.

Museum Hosts Lecture and Film Series

Nancy Floyd’s brother Jim was killed in 1969 in the Vietnam War.

(SALEM) - The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University will host an illustrated slide lecture and four-part film series in conjunction with its current exhibition, The James M. Floyd Memorial: An Installation by Nancy Floyd, which is on display until Oct. 21st in the Study Gallery.

Mixed media artist Nancy Floyd will discuss her work from the past 20 years, including the 1986 creation of The James M. Floyd Memorial and its relation to her most recent work, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM Sept. 15th in the museum’s Roger Hull Lecture Hall.

Police Warning of Salem-Area Telephone Scam

Police say you should never provide personal information to anyone who calls looking for it.

(SALEM) - Several Salem residents say they have been called and advised that they are eligible for a government grant of several thousand dollars.

They are told that all they have to do is provide their bank account number, or send a check for a few hundred dollars to collect this "free" grant.

This is NOT a legitimate offer and is designed to scam people out of hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Oregon Civil Air Patrol Expands Seismic Survey Mission

The exercise will be used not only to gather information for the USGS, but will also serve to train new and existing air crews and ground personnel in disaster response and to effectively utilize new technology in disaster triage, rescue and recovery operations" said Traver.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and the United States Geological Survey, will participate in a 6 state seismic survey event the weekend of August 25th-27th.

Oregon's CAP will operate out of Willamette Aviation at the Aurora State Airport with 5 aircraft and up towards 50 personnel.

Camp Adair Inspection Begins

Camp Adair, located near Corvallis, was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility for several army divisions.

(CORVALLIS) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor Shaw Environmental will be conducting a site inspection of former Camp Adair and Adair Air Force Station beginning this week evaluating Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training.

The former Camp Adair and Adair Air Force Station is located in parts of Polk, Benton and Linn counties, near Corvallis.

Clausen Takes Over as Commander of Marion County Sheriff’s Office Parole and Probation Division

The division is comprised of nearly 70 staff, 42 of which are Parole and Probation Deputies who supervise more than 4,100 offenders in Marion County.

(SALEM) - Troy Clausen has been sworn in as the new Commander of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Parole and Probation Division.

Commander Clausen graduated from Western Oregon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement.

He began his career in law enforcement when he joined the Independence Police Department in 1991.
