Veterans Admitted Free to the Oregon State Fair

A veteran voucher will get those who served through the gates two different days, and they base veteran status on the honor system.

(SALEM) - Organizers of the 2006 Oregon State Fair have set aside two days to recognize the service and sacrifice of Oregon veterans. The designated ‘Veterans' Appreciation Days' are set for the first weekend of the Fair, Saturday, August 26th and Sunday, August 27th.

All veterans will be admitted free when they present a veteran voucher to the ticket office located at any Fair entrance gate.

Teacher Accused of Sexual Abusing Three Students Pleads Not Guilty

More charges filed against a former elementary school teacher

(SALEM) - A Pratum Elementary School teacher accused of 14 counts of First-Degree Sex Abuse and one count of Attempted Sexual Abuse pled not guilty to the charges Friday.

A date for trial will be determined at 1:30 PM, Wednesday, August 30th for Matthew Gould.

On June 29th, the Marion County District Attorney`s office filed ten additional counts of first degree sex abuse against the former Pratum Elementary School teacher.

Fugitive With Racist Ties Sought in Clackamas County

Dale Amstutz-Dunn is also a self-professed member of a notorious hate group, "Oregon Aryan Crime Syndicate".

(CLACKAMAS) - "This fugitive is to be considered armed and dangerous. He has 17 prior arrests, which are documented as unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felon in possession of a weapon, theft in the second degree and burglary."

Clackamas Sheriff's Office Spokesman Jim Strovink says deputies are on the trail of 25-year old Dale Amstutz-Dunn, since connecting him to a series of residential burglaries reported in the Colton, south rural area of Clackamas County.

Salem Area Unemployment Rate at 5.4 Percent in July

Figures in Salem are close to the state level of 5.6 percent.

(SALEM) - The Salem-area unemployment rate remained steady in July at 5.4 percent, down slightly from 5.5 percent in June.

According to state officials, the Salem-area has added some 2,000 jobs in the last 12 months. There was not a figure listed for the same number of positions vacated in the same period of time.

Coast Guard Assists Vessel Taking on Water Near Newport

Nobody was hurt in the incident that took place off Alsea Bay early Thursday.

(NEWPORT) - Coast Guard Sector/Air Station North Bend, responded to a distress call early Thursday morning from a 45-foot fishing vessel that was taking on water, about four and a half miles west of Alsea Bay.

A Coast Guard spokesman says their North Bend rescue station received a distress call on VHF channel 16 at 1:30 AM. The call came in from the master of the fishing vessel Paradise, stating that they were taking on water and in need of assistance.

Salem Police Meet with Neighborhood Associations

Citizens attending the meeting learned that 5,000 go 7,000 feet of new graffiti hits Salem's walls each month, and it hints of much bigger problems.

(SALEM) - Gang activity and graffiti are both on the rise in Salem. Police say these issues are placing an increasing load on officers and eroding safety in neighborhoods. These were the topics at a special meeting Salem Police held with the community Thursday evening. They say it is part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness of these growing problems before they get out of hand.

Thefts, graffiti, and other related crimes generally point to gang related activities.

This was the second meeting in this area concerning gang involvement and graffiti related problems. I asked one guest why she was attending this meeting and she answered, “I am here to listen to what the Salem Police has to tell me.” This is exactly why the officers were there. To share information, to inform the citizens, and to answer any questions they may have.

Wyden, Smith Propose More than 125,000 Acres for Wilderness Designation on Mount Hood and in Columbia River Gorge

(PORTLAND) - More than two decades after the last wilderness areas were added to protect Mount Hood, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith unveiled their bipartisan proposal Thursday to permanently protect more than 125,000 acres of wilderness on Mount Hood and in the Columbia River Gorge — an increase of almost 70 percent over existing wilderness protections.
