Salem Lands 90 New Jobs Through Expansion at Garmin International

This is Garmin International’s second expansion in Salem. In 2004, Garmin expanded its hangar space and hired about 16 employees.

(SALEM) - Garmin International says it plans increase it’s workforce in Salem by 90 employees within the next four years.

Garmin AT will also spend some $9 million to expand it’s office building at 2345 Turner Road SE and hangar at the Salem airport.

The company currently employs 165 people.

“We are fortunate that the acceptance of our current aviation products has enabled this growth, and allowed us to make a greater contribution to the area,” said John Macnab, Garmin AT’s General Manager.

Three Men, Clinging to a Cooler, Rescued From Cold Ocean Waters

Only one of the men was wearing a life jacket.

(TILLAMOOK) - The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three men from the cold waters of the Oregon Coast near Tillamook Friday night.

The men had been missing for around seven-and-a-half hours in water with temperatures as low as 65 degrees and were found clinging to an ice chest among the debris of their vessel.

Raw Oyster Illness Outbreak Hits Oregon, Washington, And British Columbia

At least 14 cases have been identified in Oregon during the past few days.

(SALEM) - In the wake of a sharp increase of illnesses associated with eating uncooked oysters, Oregon public health officials are warning the public of their potential health risk.

Most report eating raw oysters at restaurants in Portland or Medford. One ate oysters that were privately harvested in Washington State. In the past week, more than 15 cases have also been reported among residents of Washington and British Columbia.

Road Bandits Kidnap and Rob Man in Rural Marion County

Investigators say the suspects posed as police officers to get the driver to stop.

(SALEM) - A 28-year old man from Woodburn says he was kidnapped Saturday night by men who flagged him down while using a badge and claiming to be police officers. It happened around 8:20 PM at Butteville Road and Crosby Road NE in rural Marion County.

The man told Marion County Sheriff’s Office investigators that two to three unknown Hispanic men took him and his vehicle from the location off Butteville Road...

Corvallis Man Arrested for Fatal March Crash in Santiam Pass

The man who died, 57-year old Ju Feng was a Chinese national visiting the United States.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State Police troopers say they arrested a Corvallis man Friday on charges stemming from a March 2006 fatal motor vehicle crash on the Santiam Pass. 34-year old Pengcheng Wu of Corvallis will face charges for Criminally Negligent Homicide.

Police say Wu was the driver of a 1998 Chevrolet Prism four-door sedan that was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 79 on March 18th 2006, at approximately 8:10 PM, when the vehicle apparently crossed the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2006 GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle, driven by 65-year old Robert L. Morris of Bend.

A passenger in the Honda, 57-year old Ju Feng died at the scene. Feng was a Chinese national and was visiting the United States at the time of the collision.

Governor Calls on State High Education Board to Make College More Affordable

Expanding Oregon Opportunity Grants will help more students.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski urged State Board of Higher Education Friday to adopt a plan that makes higher education affordable for all Oregonians by the time this year’s eighth graders enter college. The plan, which expands the Oregon Opportunity Grants, is an integral part of the Governor’s Education Enterprise.

“When it comes to a college education, we need to help not only our neediest students, but our middle-class students as well,” said Governor Ted Kulongoski. “This is a plan that should appeal to everyone – because before a student can qualify for a state education grant, he or she must maximize resources from the federal government, from their own families and through their own sweat equity.”

Detectives Arrest Six, Seize Drugs and Cash

This group of six was arrested for possessing less than $1000 in drugs and money

(KEIZER) - Just after 7:00 AM Friday, Street Crimes Detectives served a search warrant at 4035 Arleta Ave NE in Keizer. After entering the home, investigators found nearly 10 grams of meth, one gram of heroin and one gram of dried marijuana with a street value of about $500. Also seized was more than $400 in cash.

42-year old Kaylynn Velasco, 31-year old Abraham Patricio-Reyes, 27-year old Aureliano Estrada-Silva, 22-year old Tanicia Velasco, 23-year old BJ Beaty and 32-year old Nicolas Cruz-Estrada, all of Salem, were arrested.

Spoke Folk Arrives in Silverton

Trinity Lutheran Church will host the youth group's special program

(SILVERTON) - A great group of young adult bikers aged 16-20, known as Spoke Folk, will be in Silverton on Tuesday, August 1st.

This spirited group will present an exciting, interactive, contemporary music program including music, drama, and puppets for all ages to enjoy.

The members of the Spoke Folk team represent many states and a few have come from a long way. During their 12-day tour, they will bike from their training site to six other communities in Oregon averaging 40 miles a day. Each evening while “on the road,” they share their musical program.
