Smith, Wyden Secure $10 Million to Aid Oregon Salmon Fishermen

Funding is a start to direct aid for coastal communities.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - After months pressuring the Administration and their Senate colleagues, U.S. Senators Gordon H. Smith (R-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) announced $10 million has been secured in a funding bill that is ready for consideration by the full Senate to help salmon fishermen and related businesses cope with the financial impact of the restricted salmon season.

“We have a down payment,” Smith said. “These funds will go directly to our fishermen and local businesses impacted by the restricted season. Oregon’s fishermen have tough months ahead of them. We need to continue to work toward a basin wide solution that improves the situation. As long as there are problems with the Klamath, our fishermen will need our help.”

“This is the beginning, not the end, of our work to get direct assistance for our fishermen and coastal communities,” Wyden said.

Oregon International Airshow This Weekend in Hillsboro

(HILLSBORO) - The 2006 Oregon International Airshow is set for this Saturday and Sunday at the Hillsboro Airport. All kinds of aircraft and airplane-related events are scheduled, and organizers say the increasing popularity of the event couls make it the biggest in history.

Salem Pizza Delivery Driver Assaulted, Robbed

The suspect is described as white male, with reddish hair. He was last seen wearing a white sweatshirt, and a baseball cap. He also had a small cross tattooed on one of his forearms.

(SALEM) - Salem police are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect and a vehicle after the man broke into a Salem apartment and ordered a pizza, then assaulted and robbed the pizza delivery driver.

Panda Express Opens It’s Doors to Salem on Saturday

(SALEM) - The Chinese fast-food chain Panda Express is opening it’s first Salem restaurant on Saturday. The chain has been established for several years, operating in places like Southern California and Nevada.

The restaurant, will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and you can even fax your orders ahead.

During Saturday’s grand opening event, Panda Express will be giving out promotional items such as T-shirts, footballs, flying disks, and key chains.

Oregon Arts Commission Announces Grants to Over 100 Oregon Arts Groups

Many grants were awarded to organizations in Salem, Corvallis and the Oregon coast.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Arts Commission has announced $655,500 in grants to 102 Oregon arts organizations awarded through its FY2007 Operating Support, Arts Services and Arts Learning Grant programs. “The organizations supported with these funds demonstrate the strength and breadth of the arts in Oregon,” said Cynthia Addams of Keizer, chair of the Arts Commission. “The Commission is pleased to be a partner in funding so many arts activities that benefit Oregon and its people.”

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Compliance Sweep

Polk County arrested seven different sex offenders in the operation.

(DALLAS) - Polk County Sheriff’s Office, along with many other Law Enforcement partners conducted its annual County wide sex offender sweep July 11th. The purpose of the sweep is to ensure that convicted sex offenders are complying with required sex offender registration laws.

The annual event utilizes law enforcement teams who locate and contact those registered sex offenders believed to be non-compliant with the sex offender registration laws, especially those offenders determined to be predatory in nature.

Gas Leak Forces Airport Evacuation in Klamath Falls

(KLAMATH FALLS) - There was a flurry of activity Thursday morning on the runway and in the passenger terminal at the Klamath Falls Airport.

Ryan Brown with KFLS Radio says it was approximately 9:00 AM when a gas leak was discovered at Kingsley Field that forced the evacuation of the terminal building.

Emergency crews responded to the scene. It took crews about an hour to make repairs from the time it was discovered.

Governor Fights Labor Protection Rollback

Office personally delivers letter to National Labor Relations Board.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski directed his office Thursday to personally deliver a letter – signed by all Democratic members of Oregon’s Congressional delegation – urging the National Labor Relations Board to conduct open public hearings on rulings that could severely weaken core worker protections.

"My efforts to protect Oregon’s middle class and create a strong and fair economy are dependent upon a healthy labor movement in our country. Oregonians deserve to be heard in decisions that could weaken worker rights and core labor protections," said the Governor.

At stake is the ability of nurses, building trade workers, electricians, construction workers and many other skilled workers to organize collectively for health care, worker safety, living wages and much more.

Commission Denies Qwest Business Services Deregulation Proposal

Theough their request is denied, Oregon will allow Qwest some pricing flexibility.

(SALEM) - Thursday the Oregon Public Utility Commission largely turned down a request by Qwest Communications Inc. to deregulate all telecommunications services it offers to businesses throughout Oregon.

Qwest claimed these services should be exempt from regulation because it is losing market share. However, an investigation by Commission staff found that Qwest still dominates the telecommunications market for business services outside of the Portland and Clackamas rate centers. In addition, market concentration measures suggest that the telecommunications market in Qwest’s service territory is not competitive.

“Most telling to me is the fact that Qwest has never reduced its prices to stem the loss of market share despite the fact that it can do so without prior approval of the PUC. With few exceptions, its business services are being offered at their maximum allowable prices,” Commission Chairman Lee Beyer said. “Is that competitive market behavior, I don’t think so.”

Construction and Remodeling Boom in Newport

(NEWPORT) - Newport and its Nye Beach district are experiencing a bit of a construction and remodeling boom, with many of the historic cottages going under the carpenter’s knife and a spurt of commercial construction as well.

Much of the activity is centered in atmospheric Nye Beach, but there has been a large, high profile addition to the historic Bayfront district too - all of it expected to boost the local tourism business in numerous ways.

One of the more prominent examples of reconstruction and remodeling is the Anchor Pier on the Bayfront, which includes an upscale lodging, a gift shop, office space, a leasable spot suited for a restaurant and the newly fitted headquarters for Marine Discovery Tours.
