Chef`s Night Out Tickets Available July 12th

Last year's event raised more than $53,000 for the Marion-Polk Food Share.

(SALEM) - Tickets go on sale Wednesday, July 12th for Chefs’ Nite Out, one of Salem’s premier food and wine events.

The event features 45 restaurants, caterers, wineries and other beverage purveyors from throughout the region.

Tickets are $65 per person and available through the Food Share. Participants offer tastes of their signature dishes and beverages. As guests mingle and talk with chefs and winemakers they can enjoy live entertainment by the Severin Sisters, guitarist Jim Skewes, and singer-songwriter Mark Seymour.

Last year, Mountain West Group Chefs’ Nite Out raised $53,000 for the Food Share. Its recipe for success relies heavily on the chefs who donate their time and talent.

Op-Ed: PERS Reform A Must

(PORTLAND) - In his 2003 Inaugural address, Governor Kulongoski declared reforming Oregon’s PERS “a test of leadership for the legislature and me,” and said the system was “bordering on crisis.” While I disagree with many of Governor Kulongoski’s positions, he was right when he said the aforementioned words. I supported the Legislature’s subsequent efforts to reform the system.

Unfortunately, the Oregon Supreme Court gutted many of those reforms, and now the PERS crisis continues but the political leadership has disappeared. In fact, the Governor not only called the Court’s opinion “balanced” but also said it “puts PERS on a sound fiscal path”.

That is an unacceptable defense of the status quo, and worse, it is misleading.

Vietnam War Photographer Dies at 60

Catherine Leroy, the French-born photojournalist whose stark images of battle helped tell the story of the Vietnam War in the pages of Life magazine and other publications, died Saturday. She was 60.

(SANTA MONICA) - Catherine Leroy died of cancer early Saturday at St John's Health Center in Santa Monica, says attending physician, Dr Jerome Helman.

As a 21-year old in 1966, she bought a one-way ticket to Saigon to document American troops in Vietnam.

A year later she joined the likes of Dickey Chapelle in becoming one of the the only accredited journalists to participate in a combat parachute jump, joining the 173rd Airborne in Operation Junction City.

Catherine Leroy received the George Polk award for Best Reporting Requiring Exceptional Courage and Enterprise Abroad, and she was the first woman to receive the Robert Capa Award for her coverage of the civil war in Lebanon in 1976.

Two Men Arrested For Trespassing on SUMCO Property

(SALEM) - Salem police arrested two men after security officers found them trespassing on the SUMCO property, 3990 Fairview Industrial Drive SE.

Prostar security reported the incident just before 3:30 AM, after they found a pickup truck unattended and one of the men was seen walking around the property.

With the help of a police dog, officers were able to track down the men, who they say were trying to run from the area.

Arrested were 40-year-old Emery Roberts of Salem, and 22-year-old Claude Jones of Albany.

Crash Near Florence Leaves Woman Critically Injured

(FLORENCE) - Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on Highway 101 about three miles south of Florence. The
crash has left one person in critical condition, and troopers are investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor.

Investigators say that at around 12:40 PM Sunday, a 2005 Dodge pickup driven by 53-year old Rodney L. Deris of Florence, was southbound on Highway 101 when it drove off into a ditch on the right shoulder then came back onto the highway and crossed the centerline.

The Dodge pickup crashed nearly head-on with a northbound 1993 Honda Civic four-door.

(SALEM) - Did you know that one of Harry houdini's escape records was beaten by a guy from Salem? Jaskson Rayne, a former student at Willamette University, set the record more than two years ago, when he was chained and submerged into a pool.

With more chains holding him in, Jackson still beat the old record established by Houdini more than 75-years ago.

Today Jackson performs for large audiences in places like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He even travels abroad visiting places like the Phillipines.

Officials Attribute 13th Month of Recruiting Success to More than Luck

Bryan Whitman, deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs emphasized that the department has not lowered recruiting standards, despite reports that have surfaced in the media.

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - Defense officials are attributing the 13th consecutive month in which every military service met or exceeded its active-duty recruiting goal to more than just good luck.

Bryan Whitman, deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs, cited the high priority every service has placed on recruiting, including the resources to back up that commitment, with successes measured both in numbers and quality of recruits.

Active-duty recruiting numbers, both for June and for the first nine months of fiscal 2006, continued to exceed 100 percent of goal across the board, Whitman said.

Racist Extremists Active in U.S. Military

Southern Poverty Law Center urges Rumsfeld to adopt zero-tolerance policy.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Under pressure to meet wartime manpower goals, the U.S. military has relaxed standards designed to weed out racist extremists. Large numbers of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads and other white supremacists are now learning the art of warfare in the armed forces.

Department of Defense investigators estimate thousands of soldiers in the Army alone are involved in extremist or gang activity. "We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad," said one investigator. "That's a problem."

Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen urged Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding racist extremism among members of the U.S. military.

Terrorist Attacks Kill Iraqi Civilians; Weapons Caches Found

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Several Iraqi civilians were killed and injured during two July 7th terrorist attacks, and multiple weapons caches were found last week, military officials in Iraq said.

Terrorists fired four mortar rounds at an open field in the northern Baghdad district of Khadimiyah on July 7th, killing four Iraqis and wounding 38 children. Iraqi children frequently use the field as a playground, officials said.

Soldiers from 5th Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, responded to the scene and assisted in the evacuation of the wounded and dead to a local hospital.

In a separate incident, a car bomb killed five Iraqis and injured two in the Bayaa district of western Baghdad on July 7th. Several homes in the area were damaged by fire as a result of the blast.

Five Soldiers Charged in Iraqi Rape, Murder Case

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Charges have been preferred against four U.S. soldiers accused of rape and murder in connection with the deaths of four Iraqi civilians in March. A fifth soldier has been accused of dereliction of duty for failing to report the offenses, U.S. officials announced today.

The five soldiers were charged Saturday in connection with their alleged participation in the rape and murder of a young Iraqi woman and the murders of three members of her family. The fifth soldier was charged with dereliction of duty for his failure to report the rape and murder of these Iraqi civilians, but is not alleged to have been a direct participant in the rape and killings, officials said in a statement.

All are charged with conspiring with former Army Pfc. Steven D. Green to commit these crimes. Green, 21, a former 101st Airborne Division soldier, was arrested June 30th in connection with the incident, according to a July 3 announcement by the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Western District of Kentucky.
