Marion County Sheriff`s Office Holding Crop-A-Cop Event

Sheriff’s office employees have volunteered their long hair, in honor of the daughter of one of their own, who is battling Leukemia.

(SALEM) - The Marion County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a Crop-A-Cop event to benefit Dornbecher Children’s Hospital on Thursday.

Marion County Sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Rau says on May 11th, 2006, 7-year-old Madison “Maddie” Melgard, daughter of Marion County Sheriff’s Sergeant Chris Melgard and Laurie Phelps, was diagnosed with Leukemia.

Oregon Primate Rescue Receives Much Needed Funding From PETCO Foundation

Oregon Primate Rescue, located in Dallas, will use the money to finish expansion of an enclosure area for its most recent rescue of a Patas monkey.

(DALLAS) - The PETCO Foundation’s annual Spring-A-Pet, which ended April 16, exceeded $1.7 million in donations.

Throughout the 4-week fundraiser, customers visiting one of PETCO’s more than 790 stores could purchase “Spring-A-Pet’ donation cards in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $20, or round up their purchase. Donors of $20 or more received a “Making a Difference” picture frame.

Downtown Salem Parking Forum Set For July 18th

Help plan downtown Salem’s parking future. So far Salem city officials have made no decisions on what to do about downtown parking problem.

(SALEM) - The Downtown Advisory Board, Salem Downtown Association, CAN-DO and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce are co-sponsoring a downtown Salem Parking Forum July 18, a get more input from residents and downtown business owners about what needs and should be done about the parking crisis in the downtown Salem area.

Organizers will discuss the June 8th usage data compiled on 10,000 CBD parking stalls.

They will also share information gathered from 166 downtown businesses that responded to recent parking survey, and 30 downtown employers and other stakeholders interviews.

According to the survey respondents said that parking congestion downtown is getting worse and the “status quo” is no longer acceptable.

Possible solutions that were suggested were to extend 2-hour time limit area; or introduce paid on-street parking.

The forum will be held at the Reed Opera House...

First Wednesday Culture Fest Sinks Time Capsule While Celebrating Sidewalks (VIDEO)

Vandals Strike Historic Salem Cemetery

Jason Lee is one of Salem's early pioneers. The cemetery contains his remains and many other early settlers as well as later residents. The vandals struck down headstones that had stood the test of time in some cases, for more than a century and a half.

(SALEM) - Most criminals at least have respect for the dead. Every now and then though, somebody stoops so low that it leaves people shaking their heads, wondering what possible kind of thrill a person gets by ransacking a resting place of the dead.

It has always a subject of interest, and lately the historic Lee Mission Cemetery in Salem has been receiving positive work from many, ranging from community volunteers, to prison inmates.

It`s Salem....And We Dance

(SALEM) - The "It's Salem...And We Dance," dance event series kicks off Tuesday night at the Reed Opera House Trinity Ballroom in downtown Salem.

The July 11th event will begin with a one hour beginner Zydeco dance lesson by Debra Seeck, aka Mz Jitterbug, followed by two hours of open dancing and socializing. No-host drinks and appetizers will be available by Alessandro's and Trinity Vineyards will be offering wine tasting during the night. Dance demonstrations by other local instructors in Lindy Hop, Balboa, Country Two-Step, West Coast Swing and Night Club Two-Step will complement the night.

The renewed public interest in dancing sparked by television shows, "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Say You Can Dance," prompted Ms Seeck’s vision of starting a regular dance event in Salem.
