The Countdown Is On for HOPE

The HOPE Initiative is within 25,000 signatures to qualify for the November ballot, but the deadline draws near. This Friday is the last day for all signatures to be in Salem.

(SALEM) - There are currently 615,000 Oregonians without health insurance.

Knowing the number is the easy part. Finding a way to decrease it, a whole other story.

Last August, 76% of Oregonians polled said they believe that health care is a fundamental right. This Friday, we’ll see if they put their signatures where their percentage points were.

American pilots, who chose to enter WW1 before the U.S. officially became involved, joined a French Air Service organization called the Lafayette Escadrille. They fought and died and were cherished by France. The movie debuts today.

(SALEM) - A movie set to debut in October called The Flyboys casts these historic pilots in a Top Gun sort of way. The pilots in WW1 were little more than kids, with the early 20’s being the average age.

Throwing a cigarette butt out of your vehicles window is not only littering, it could cause a bark dust or grass fire that could lead to thousands of dollars in property damage or worse.

(SALEM) - While I’m not opposed to people and their right as Americans to smoke, as a new home owner, I’m a little disgusted over the number of smokers who throw their butts out the window for others to pick up.

Fatal Crash Stops Highway 22 Near Detroit

State Police and emergency crews are on the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash near Detroit, drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible or expect long delays.

(DETROIT) - Police and fire crews say a crash on Highway 22 at the west end of Detroit Lake near Big Cliff Dam happened around 7:30 PM Sunday claimed the life of one person.

Oregon State Police were enroute to the scene at 7:45 PM.

Fire personnel already on scene report that this crash as fatal. At this point, they say the number of vehicles involved is unknown, and the initial report involves one
fatality.

Oregon Governor Joins Lawsuit Against Bush Over Nuclear Contamination

Suit charges failure to address damages around Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski joined a lawsuit Monday against the Bush administration, charging that the federal government has failed to adequately address damage by nuclear contamination to natural resources around the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

The other plaintiffs in the lawsuit are the State of Washington, the Yakima Nation and the Nez Perce Tribe.

“We need to ensure a full cleanup of the contamination that has occurred on and around the Hanford site,” Governor Kulongoski said. “If the Bush Administration fails to..."

Amtrak Train Bound For Eugene Hits Car, Four Killed

The Amtrak Cascades Train #507 was scheduled for a stop in Salem.

(CASTLE ROCK, Wa.) - An Amtrak Cascades train from Seattle bound for Eugene struck a car crossing the tracks from a private road Monday afternoon, all four in the car were killed.

The train, was scheduled to make stops in Portland, Salem, and Albany before reaching Eugene.

None of the 123 passengers onboard the train were injured in the incident.

Police say the train was traveling anywhere from 40 to 79 mph, and it took about a half a mile to get the train stopped.

Op-Ed: Impact of Incest Lingers for Male Victims as Well

This column is written in the heat of summer about a hot-button topic that has for far too long been hidden in society's closet. It is time that it sees the light of day. That topic is incest's impact on male victims, which is at times trivialized.

(SALEM) - I am by no means an expert on sexual abuse, quite the opposite, having grown up in a hugely Victorian family on the East Coast. But over the last decade, as a Clinical Social Worker in Oregon, I have had nearly a dozen adult male clients who retain the trauma left by childhood incest and abuse.

In one case, the victim was actually transferred from the home of an alcoholic mother to foster care with a church elder. Reportedly the elder had a dying wife, and chose to molest his young teenage ward as a substitute for his perverted hormones. In another case, both parents allegedly molested their little boy to the extent that he required surgery.

Salem Downtown Sidewalk Improvement Project Nearing Completion

(SALEM) - Crews are nearing completion of construction of new sidewalk improvements in three downtown locations.

The new sidewalks were laid in parts of downtown Salem and city officials say they appreciate the patience of drivers and shoppers as they created a much improved downtown pedestrian area.

The new sidewalks are part of the Downtown Streetscape Improvement Program which has been in place since 1985.

Man Arrested in Gulf War Veteran Rape Case

(CANBY) - One man is behind bars, and police are still searching for the other suspects involved in a forceable rape and sex abuse investigation involving a U.S. Air Force Gulf War veteran.

Police arrested 30-year-old Alejandro Ramos-Gonzalez from Canby on First Degree Rape, First Degree Kidnapping, and First Degree Burglary charges. He is logged in the Clackamas County Jail.

Investigators believe this horrible incident is gang related. Police say Ramos-Gonzalez has gang ties.
