Therapy Turns to Beautiful Art at The Oregon State Hospital

Patients at the hospital take great pride in their work, which is displayed throughout the hospital for all to enjoy.

(SALEM) - It may look old and worn out on the outside, but on the inside, beautiful, and colorful hand painted artwork hangs from the walls for all to enjoy.

Patients at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, are using culture and art as part of their therapy and daily living.

Patients work extremely hard on the artwork both as individuals, and as groups to help them learn and understand about different cultures from around the world according to George Bachik, Director of Social Work at the hospital.

Semi-Trucks Crash Head-On in Wilsonville

(WILSONVILLE) - Oregon State Police and local emergency personnel responded to a head-on crash at 4:00 PM on Highway 551 near Keil Road involving two commercial trucks. The crash tied up Wilsonville traffic in several directions requiring a large response from police, firefighters and medical personnel.

Rollover Crash Kills Baker City Man

(BAKER CITY) - A 19-year old Baker City resident died Monday afternoon when he lost control of the sport utility vehicle he was driving and rolled several times off Highway 30 about three miles north of Baker City.

Around 3:25 PM, a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo driven by 19-year old Jeremy Wade Bates of Baker City, was southbound on Highway 30 near milepost 47 when it drifted onto the right gravel shoulder. Police say Jeremy Bates attempted to correct the path of the vehicle but over corrected and veered into both lanes.

The Isuzu continued off the southbound shoulder and rolled several times before coming to rest on its top.

Record Heat Scorches Mid-Valley

(SALEM) - Back in the 80`s, I can remember my mom and dad packing my brother and I up in the Mercury Zephyr station wagon, with no air conditioning, heading east for hot, dry summers of Kansas and Nebraska to visit family.

Picture two teenage boys, both going to different high schools, small 4-door station wagon, no air conditioning, only diet Shasta pop, yes even grapefruit flavored, and temperatures well over 100 degrees everyday, you get my drift.

On Monday, my three kids who don't travel in an un-air conditioned vehicle, and also have a pool, got just a taste of those boring stories, they say, from my youth.

Several Serious Crashes on Oregon`s Roads Monday

Drownings, severe heat and fatal car crashes have kept the state’s emergency services hopping in recent days. The summer is off to a bad start and it could get worse.

(SALEM) - State Police troopers are on the scene of a serious traffic crash involving injuries at Highway 551 and Keil Road near the Aurora Airport. Troopers say the crash happened just before 4:00 PM.

Roads are closed in the area as emergency personnel and investigators deal with the reported Head-on with multiple injuries.

Oregon State Police and LifeFlight on scene, and additional personnel are Enroute. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.

Man Dies While Rescuing Swimmers

John Steven Rae died saving the lives of three others.

(DETROIT) - A 59-year old man from Crabtree, Oregon died Sunday afternoon while successfully rescuing three swimmers who were in distress. John Steven Rae was able to help them to shore, but slipped underwater after completing the third rescue.

According to the deputy on scene, Mr. Rae noticed three females, one 20-year old, one 15-year old, and one nine-year old, who had jumped into the lower falls area...

Governor in Korea to Promote Trade, Oregon-Built Helicopters

The Governors agenda includes ‘helitankers,’ tractors, semi-conductors, shipping and food

(SEOUL, Republic of Korea) - Governor Kulongoski met with Korean forestry officials Monday and urged them to strengthen their fleet of Oregon-built Erickson Air-Crane helicopters, used for fighting wildfires.

`The Erickson Air-Crane has proved itself here in Korea and around the world—wherever wildfires threaten lives, homes, natural resources and national treasures,` the Governor said.

He thanked the Republic of Korea`s Office of Forestry for being a valuable Oregon customer, and encouraged Korean leaders to purchase more Air-Cranes.

He also urged them to take advantage of Oregon`s expertise and technology in fighting wildfires.

Coast Guard Rescues Salem Girl From Cliff

(LINCOLN CITY) - The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 16-year-old girl from a cliff near Lincoln City around 4:00 PM Sunday.

Coast Guard Air Facility Newport launched an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter after receiving a call that a girl had become stranded near the top of a cliff in the vicinity of Lincoln City.

Coast Guard officials say the girl, who is from Salem, had climbed about two-thirds of the way up a 150-foot cliff before she realized she couldn't go any further and couldn't figure out how to get back down.

Illegal Fireworks a High Priority for Police and Fire Officials

Salem Police And Fire are increasing enforcement this year. In general, illegal fireworks are those that explode, fly 12 inches into the air, or travel more than 6 feet on the ground.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department, along with the Salem Fire Department will be increasing their enforcement of illegal fireworks this Fourth of July holiday.

Salem police spokesman Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says every year officers respond to numerous calls from citizens involving illegal fireworks.

"Many of these calls originate from citizens concerned about fire danger, noise violations, property damage, and potential injury," Kohlmeyer said.
