Record Heat Hits Salem Sunday

The record heat is expected to continue Monday, then taper off through the rest of the week.

(SALEM) - Baby it`s hot outside!

The official high temperature from the National Weather Service in Salem Sunday was 100 degrees, barely breaking the old record of 99 degrees.

But if you were traveling throughout the city, temperature signs read anywhere from 102 degrees in downtown Salem, to 105 degrees in south Salem.

According to the National Weather Service, the hot, dry weather is expected to continue through Tuesday, then taper off to the mid 80`s through the rest of the week.

On Monday, the mercury is expected to top 102 degrees.

Salem-Keizer stores were having a hard time keeping up with the demand for such items as bottled water, ice, ice cream, and even sun tan lotion.

4th Drowning Victim of Weekend

Record temperatures send many to the water for relief, but without the proper safety devices

(OREGON CITY) - Another apparent drowning has occurred, with the report of a 12-year old girl missing in Roslyn Lake, near Oregon City.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Rescue and The Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium are on scene actively searching the lake, and say that four girls, ages 12, 13 and two 17-year olds, were wading in the water about 100 yards from the shore with no life jackets, and waded into a deep hole.

A boater came to the aid of the four girls. The 13-year old was rescued, and provided medical attention on shore and transported by AMR to the Mt Hood Medical Center.

Unfortunately, the 12-year old is still missing and divers are working in the area of this body of water to assume this recovery effort.

Body of Missing Teen Recovered From Walter Wirth Lake

13-year-old Maria Martinez was last seen Saturday while swimming with a friend at the popular swimming spot at Cascade Gateway Park

(SALEM) - Linn County Sheriff`s Office divers recovered the body of 13-year-old Maria Martinez Sunday just before 2:00 PM in about 25-feet of water.

An Oregon Army National Guard Helicopter from Salem on it`s way back from a training mission helped in locating the teens body.

Governor Orders Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier

Flags to be flown at half-staff on Monday in honor of Private First Class Thomas L. Tucker.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski has ordered that all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Monday, in memory of Private First Class Thomas L. Tucker of Madras, Oregon.

PFC Tucker was assigned to the Army`s 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He was killed on or about June 16th near Baghdad, Iraq.

"Private First Class Tucker was a son of Oregon and a true American Hero. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family..."

Search Continues For Missing 13-Year-Old Girl (AUDIO)

Fire, Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard want to remind ALL swimmers, especially children, NO matter how experienced you maybe, to always wear a life jacket when swimming in Oregon waterways.

(SALEM) - The Linn County Sheriff`s Office Dive team is back searching the murky waters of Walter Wirth lake at Cascade Gateway Park, for a 13-year-old girl who apparently drowned Saturday while swimming with a friend.

The Salem Fire Department`s Water Rescue team spent most of Saturday evening searching the north end of the lake, but couldn`t find the girls body.

The park is a popular picnic spot that draws many local families.

Fatal Crash Closes Highway 18 Near Valley Junction

State Police and local emergency responders are on the scene.

(SALEM) - Police and fire crews are on the scene of a fatal traffic crash on Highway 18 just east of Valley Junction. The incident was reported just after 11:00 AM.

According to Oregon State Police, initial reports indicate three vehicles are involved in the crash, one of which caught fire.

According to the National Weather Service, the hot, dry weather is expected to continue through Friday. On Sunday and Monday, the mercury is expected to top 100 degrees.

Young Girl Missing at Cascade Gateway Park

The missing child is a 13-year old Salem girl who was visiting the park with family and friends.

(SALEM) - Salem Police and Fire spent much of Saturday on scene at Cascade Gateway Park in Salem over a report of a missing 13-year old girl.

Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says reports indicate that the young girl was last seen in the lake at Cascade Gateway Park.

The 101.2 acre Cascade Gateway Park is located in South Salem at 2100 Turner Road SE. It is a popular picnic spot with a natural lake and a creek that draws many local families.

Two of the girl's friends who last saw her, reported that the young girl went under the water and did not come back up.

Numerous High-Risk Grass Fires Occur in Salem

(SALEM) - Salem Fire Fighters got an early start of responding to high and low risk fires during this dry period. Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says that in the last 48 hours there have been over 10 fires that have been started in bark dust or in grass fields.

Although none of them have been determined to have been started by fire works.

Aaron Spelling Dead at 83

The world's most prolific TV producer has died at the age of 83

(LOS ANGELES) - Aaron Spelling, who produced such television hit programs as "Charlie's Angels," "Dynasty" and "Beverly Hills, 90210" has died, according to the Associated Press.

Spelling was 83.

Spelling's career started with the early TV Westerns. 50 years later, his name was linked to almost 200 television titles representing more than 4,200 hours of programming, earning him recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records as the `most prolific' TV producer.
