Abused Farm Animals Get New Lease on Life (VIDEO)

For one sheep named Jessie, found wandering the streets of McMinnville, the sanctuary means a fresh chance and a new beginning.

(SALEM) - Wayne Geiger cares for farm animals that have been abused or neglected. The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary is a project that grew from a direct need to shelter livestock when Wayne worked for what was then known as the Willamette Valley Humane Society.

A project created initially to house four abused sheep from a farm, grew into a multi-acre facility that cares for nearly 150 abused and neglected animals.

Tanning Salon Owner Accused of Photographing Clients

Police are seeking more possible victims.

(WOODBURN) - A Woodburn tanning salon owner is accused of taking photographs of his clients on his cell phone while they tanned.

Police arrested 40-year-old Randy Ruiz of Gervais for invading the privacy of his clients at Cutters Tanning. Police investigated after a client filed a complaint.

The police found Ruiz may have taken pictures of numerous partially clad clients during the last six months.

Video News Classes Will be Offered

(SALEM) - All the news experience in the world does not prepare a print journalist for the complicated transistion into the world of electronic video, yet that need is increasing as the print industry increasingly moves toward video storytelling.

Newspaper journalists and photojournalists may be among the nation's richest storytellers, but experience didn't teach them how to operate a video camera, edit a non-linear video clip, or write for broadcast.

Oregon State to Graduate Its Largest Class in History

The graduation ceremony, begins at 2:00 PM at Reser Stadium, and will be broadcast live over Oregon Public Broadcasting.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University will graduate what may be the largest class in its history on Sunday, June 18th, when it holds its 137th annual commencement.

Warren Washington, an OSU alumnus and outgoing chairman of the prestigious National Science Board, will give the commencement address.

About 4,300 students will graduate from OSU in 2006 with some 4,440 degrees. Both would be records, according to Barbara Balz, the university's registrar. Oregon State has attracted record enrollments over the past several years, leading to larger and larger graduating classes.

Survey: 24 Percent Between 18-50 Tattooed

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - A sun shines on Dan Yu's back, alongside a swimming koi fish. A tree soon may grow on his arm. "Your body's an empty canvas, so you almost want to continue to add to it," said Yu, 28, as he showed off his tattoos.

A generation or two ago, Yu's tattoos — to say nothing of his pierced nose — probably would have placed him in a select company of soldiers, sailors, bikers and carnival workers. But no longer: The American University employee is among about 36 percent of Americans age 18 to 29 with at least one tattoo, according to a survey.

The study, scheduled to appear Monday on the Web site of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, provides perhaps the most in-depth look at tattoos since their popularity exploded in the early 1990s.

Traffic officers from five police agencies participated in a saturation patrol on Interstate-5 Friday in Salem.

A total of 11 officers from Oregon State Police, Marion County Sheriff's Office, and Keizer, Woodburn, and Salem Police Departments participated in saturation patrols on Interstate 5.

Salem Police detectives arrested 27-year old Michael Joshua Ruiz of Keizer and 39-year old Beth Louise Nicolet of Salem, as a result of an investigation into an Identity Theft ring.

Ruiz and Nicolet were located at the Super 8 Motel in Woodburn and a search warrant was served on their room, in which laptop computers, counterfeit checks, stolen checks, drugs and a loaded handgun were found.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo on Friday upheld the Oregon School Activities Association's six-class system for high school sports.

Castillo said that when the OSAA adopted the classification system, it did not violate state or federal laws, the rules of the Department of Education, or its own rules "in a manner that would have changed the outcome."

State Seeks Comment on Combining Salem-Based Schools for Deaf, Blind

A series of statewide public input sessions are planned in to provide the Superintendent with additional information to assist her in evaluating the proposal.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Education is accepting public input on a proposal to relocate the Salem-based Oregon School for the Blind on to the campus of the Oregon School for the Deaf, located at 999 Locust St. NE.

The 2005 Oregon Legislature approved the budget for the Oregon Department of Education with direction to the agency to `provide a report to the interim Senate and House education committees as well as to the Emergency Board during 2005-2007 on the cost-effectiveness of transferring the program at the Oregon School for the Blind, to the Oregon School for the Deaf campus. The review shall include the cost-effectiveness of contracting out of the two programs to a local education agency.`

The Oregon School for the Blind was established in 1873 to provide education services for students who are blind. The Oregon School for the Deaf was established in 1870 to provide educational services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
