Governor Kulongoski Will Try to Halt Federal Timber Sale

Earlier this year, Oregon and three other states filed suit in federal court over the repeal of the 2001 roadless rule and the adoption of the 2005 rule. Briefs have been filed and the case is slated for oral arguments in the Federal District Court on August 1st.

(SALEM) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski says he will file for a temporary restraining order in the Federal District Court in San Francisco to stop the federal government from proceeding with the sale of timber in the South Kalmiopsis Roadless Area of the Siskiyou National Forest.

Citing the need to protect roadless areas in the region of the 2002 Biscuit fire, Governor Kulongoski said that today`s federal timber auction would foreclose his ability to influence the management of Oregon`s unroaded national forests when he petitions the federal government later this year.

The U.S. Forest Service is moving forward with the timber sale despite the Governor`s March 9th letter requesting the agency not do so.

Governor`s Race Could be Six-Way Affair

(SALEM) - Oregon's fall gubernatorial race is shaping up to be one of the most crowded in years with the addition of several minor party candidates, including a veteran broadcaster and strident abortion foe who could spell trouble for Republican Ron Saxton.

Mary Starrett, the Constitution Party's nominee, says she's running as the only "true pro-life candidate," a claim that dismays other abortion opponents who are backing Saxton in hopes of putting a Republican in the Oregon governor's office for the first time in 20 years.

Two other minor party candidates are running - the Libertarian Party's Richard Morley and Pacific Green Party candidate Joe Keating - and they could peel away votes as well from either Saxton or Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

Keizer Police Investigate Early Morning Shooting

(KEIZER) - A report of gunshots fired into an apartment and into a vehicle sent Keizer Police officers scrambling to 315 Hollyhock Place North at 4:51 AM Sunday.

They say shots struck a car that was parked on the street in front of the residence. The apartment sustained damage to a window and siding, while the parked vehicle sustained damage to a window. Police say the parked vehicle did not belong to the individuals who reside inside the apartment. Nobody was hurt.

Keizer Police Officer James Young says that within minutes of the call, he located a suspicious vehicle, a black 2004 Acura 4-door, traveling southbound on River Road not far from the location of the shooting.

Reynolds Makes Big Move Into Smokeless Tobacco

(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) - Reynolds American Inc., the nation's second-largest cigarette maker, said its first-quarter profit rose 23 percent and it is planning a second major push into the smokeless tobacco category with a snuff product under its famous Camel brand.

ODFW: If You Care, Leave Baby Wildlife in the Wild

(SALEM) - State wildlife officials today reminded Oregonians that the best way to care about baby wildlife is to leave the animals in the wild.

Deer, elk, birds, seals and other animals often leave their young while they forage for food. Unfortunately, each year well-meaning people who encounter baby animals temporarily away from their parents mistake the babies for orphans and remove them from the wild.

Picking up baby wildlife stresses both the baby and the mother, who is often nearby and returns later looking for her young. A doe, for example, will continue looking and calling for her fawn for up to two days.

Fish and Wildlife Commission Limits Commercial Crab Pots

(Salem, Oregon) - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission moved to establish limits on the number of Dungeness crab pots commercial crab boats may fish in the ocean during their Dungeness crab season.

The decision came after more than two years of meetings with the public and members of the crab industry. The pot-limit plan grew out of a crab summit last July, when crab fishermen met with the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission and ODFW to discuss issues important to the industry.

Al-Zarqawi Death Prompts Attack Warning

(CAIRO, Egypt) - Al-Qaida in Iraq vowed Sunday to carry out "major attacks," insisting in a Web statement that it was still powerful after the death of leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The statement did not name a successor to al-Zarqawi, who was killed by a U.S. airstrike last week. But it said the group's leadership "renews its allegiance" to Osama bin Laden.

It vowed "to prepare major attacks that will shake the enemy like an earthquake and rattle them out of sleep."
