Backyard Burning in Parts of Marion County Ends June 15th

(SALEM) - All open and backyard burning will be prohibited beginning June 16th in those portions of Marion County that lie within the Santiam Unit of Oregon Department of Forestry's North Cascade District.

The Department of Forestry is cooperating with several local fire departments including Idanha-Detroit, Gates, Mill City, Lyons, Stayton, Sublimity, Silverton, Drakes Crossing, Aumsville, Turner and Jefferson. Only permitted and approved logging slash burning and agricultural burning will be allowed depending on weather conditions.

Event Will Celebrate Pioneer Jason Lee`s Final Return to Oregon

(SALEM) - The Lee Mission Cemetery and Mission Mill Museum have joined with community businesses, organizations and members to host a public ceremony honoring the Reverend Jason Lee, in commemoration of the 1906 reinterment of his remains in the Lee Cemetery. The event will take place Sunday June 18th at 2:00 PM at Lee Mission Cemetery 2104 D St. NE in Salem.

The event includes a welcome from Mayor Janet Taylor, historical reflections from Nancie Peacocke Fadeley, enactment of selected eulogies from the 1906 services, wreath laying by M. Lee Pelton, president of Willamette University, Tim Wood, Director of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, representing Governor Ted Kulongoski, The Bishop of the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church and representatives of Oregon Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The presentation will be followed by cemetery tours and a headstone rubbing activity hosted by Marion County Historical Society. The activity will emphasize appropriate rubbing practices to gather information and preserve the headstone.

School Employees Back Kulongoski

(SALEM) - In an about face, a union representing school classified workers has endorsed Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski over Republican Ron Saxton for the fall governor's race.

The Oregon School Employees Association had backed Kulongoski's Democratic primary challenger, Jim Hill, only a few months ago, saying that Oregon's schools were worse off now than they were when Kulongoski took office.

Sung Koo Kim Sentenced to 65 Months For Panty Theft

(HILLSBORO AP) - A convicted panty thief has been sentenced to more than five years in jail in Washington County.

Sung Koo Kim is already serving more than four years in Yamhill County - and still faces charges in Multnomah and Benton counties.

According to testimony at his trial in Washington County, Kim began stealing women's underwear when he was 17 and had collected about 34-hundred pairs by the time he was arrested in May 2004.

Alberto Puts Florida on Storm Watch

(TAMPA, Fla.) - Most of Florida's west coast was under a tropical storm watch Sunday as the first named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season spun over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening to bring heavy rain in the next few days.

By midday, Tropical Storm Alberto had maximum sustained wind near 45 mph, up 10 mph from early in the morning, but it was not likely to grow into a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said.

"We do not have any significant changes," said Lixion Avila, a senior hurricane specialist. "The system remains poorly organized."

Alberto is a lopsided tropical storm with the most intense wind and rains massed on the eastern edge of the system, Avila said. The first of the storm's rains swept across the Florida peninsula Sunday with no major reports of damage.

Police Saturation Patrol Leads to Almost 100 Citations

(SALEM) - Traffic officers from five police agencies participated in a saturation patrol on Interstate-5 Friday in Salem, pulling over dozens of drivers and citing most of them for speeding violations.

A total of 11 officers from Oregon State Police, Marion County Sheriff's Office, and Keizer, Woodburn, and Salem Police Departments participated in saturation patrols on Interstate 5.

Saturation patrol efforts were focused in the highway work zone near Kuebler Road, and other stretches of the freeway between Salem and Woodburn.

A total of 98 citations and 9 warnings were issued...

Senate Candidate Served in Iraq

(INDEPENDENCE) - "It doesn't matter if you are in favor of the war in Iraq or not. What matters is that we pay our respects to our service men and women who are serving us across the globe with honor and dignity."

Former Mayor of Monmouth Paul Evans spoke to a gathered crowd on Memorial Day at the Independence State Airport. While voicing concern for all those who serve, his primary emphasis was to honor active and fallen Oregon pilots.

He is well suited to do so; Evans is an Iraq War Veteran. He served as an air battle manager in Iraq in 2003 and 2005.

Now Paul Evans is a candidate for the Oregon Senate. To many, an honorable military background helps shape a political leader. It is not a background that many of the nation`s current wartime leaders have.
