Celebrate an Old-Fashioned 4th of July in Newport

Events include a clambake and seafood barbecue and fireworks over Yaquina Bay.

(NEWPORT) - The City of Newport invites visitors to recapture the fun of a family-friendly, old-fashioned 4th of July with a small-town flavor.

This coastal community will celebrate the holiday weekend in traditional style, beginning with a clambake and seafood barbecue at historic Nye Beach on Saturday, July 1st from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM The annual fireworks display will take place over Yaquina Bay at dusk on Tuesday, July 4th.

From the late 1800s through 1918, Newport residents celebrated the 4th of July with a clambake at Nye Beach and four years ago the tradition was revived. "We wanted to bring back the clambake not only to celebrate Independence Day, but to create a means to help our local non-profit organizations and schools raise needed funds," said organizer Berniece Hammon.

(BALTIMORE. Md.) - The father of a United States Marine who died in Iraq plans to sue a Topeka, Kan., church whose members picketed his son's funeral in March, his attorney announced recently.

Albert Snyder filed suit in U.S. District Court in Maryland, his lawyer, Sean Summers said. Snyder's 20-year-old son, Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, was killed in a non-combat vehicle accident in Iraq's Al Anbar Province March 3rd.

(SALEM) - The project to eradicate sudden oak death on the southern Oregon coast is getting good results so far.

While a five year multi-agency effort to completely get rid of the tree-killing disease has stopped short of reaching its ultimate goal, officials are encouraged that it hasn't spread beyond its original detection site east of Brookings in Curry County:

Dan Hilburn, administrator of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Plant Division, says the current site includes less than 88 acres of infected plant material, and remains the only place in Oregon where sudden oak death has been found in the natural environment.

Horses Help Wounded Soldiers Walk Again

(ARLINGTON, Va.) - Spec. Maxwell Ramsey made small kissing sounds as he tried to coax Wylie, a muscular black Percheron horse, over to the platform where the soldier stood. He swung the metal and plastic limb that is his new left leg over Wylie's back and sat down in the saddle.

"Relax your leg. Take a deep breath. Remember you are sitting on a big old cushion," Mary Jo Beckman, a therapeutic riding instructor, said to Ramsey as he and Wylie headed out into a dusty yard at Fort Myer.

The black and white horses that usually pull caissons during military funerals at neighboring Arlington National Cemetery are helping soldiers such as Ramsey in their long struggle to learn to walk again, to regain strength and to believe in their new limbs.

Supporters Lose in Gay Marriage Ban Vote

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - The Senate on Wednesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, dealing an embarrassing defeat to President Bush and Republicans who hoped to use the measure to energize conservative voters on Election Day.

Supporters knew they wouldn't achieve the two-thirds vote needed to approve a constitutional amendment, but they had predicted a gain in votes over the last time the issue came up, in 2004. Instead, they lost one vote for the amendment in a procedural test tally that ended up 49-48.

Man Arrested After Trying to Steal a Car From Salem Dealership

(SALEM) - A Salem man was arrested by Salem police early Tuesday morning after he broke into a southeast Salem used car dealership.

Police say 20-year-old Joshua Templeton, was arrested just before 2:00 AM at Dave Motors Auto on 13th Street SE.

Witnesses called police after they saw Templeton remove a screen from a window, then punch out glass, and enter the dealership`s office.

Templeton told officers he was looking for car keys so he could steal a car.

Man Suspected of Possessing Explosives Arrested in Linn County

(ALBANY) - Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller reports that deputies have arrested a Sweet Home man after he claimed to have explosives in a pack and a vest and threatened to kill himself and deputies with them.

Deputies had received information that Erik Kurt Lafond, age 23, had made statements that he had explosives and intended to detonate them. Earlier in the day, as the information was made public, the Sweet School District closed the Crawfordsville Elementary School as a safety precaution.

The investigation led deputies to attempt to contact him at his residence at 24717 West Brush Creek near Crawfordsville.

Due to the nature of the threat the Linn Benton Regional SWAT team was called out to contain the residence.

Active-Duty Troops` Data Stolen From VA

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Personal data on more than 2.2 million active-duty military personnel ” not just 50,000 as initially believed ” were among those stolen from a Veterans Affairs employee last month, the government said Tuesday.

VA Secretary Jim Nicholson said the agency was mistaken when it said over the weekend that up to 50,000 Navy and National Guard personnel ” and no other active-duty personnel ” were affected by the May 3rd burglary.

In fact, names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of as many as 1.1 million active-duty personnel from all the armed forces, along with 430,000 members of the National Guard, and 645,000 members of the Reserves, may have been included.

"VA remains committed to providing updates on this incident as new information is learned," Nicholson said in a statement, explaining that it discovered the larger numbers after the VA and Pentagon compared their electronic files more closely.

His announcement came shortly after the Pentagon distributed a briefing memo to Congress ” obtained by The Associated Press ” that said the 50,000 figure cited over the weekend was understated.
