The Red Cross Offers Tips for Planning Summer Fun: Start with Safety

(SALEM) - Summer is just around the corner, time to start planning for some fun and adventure. With so many things to do during the summer and only a few short months to do it - it`s a good idea to sit down and come up with a summer family fun plan.

How should you start your family`s fun plan? Are you preparing for Saturday pool parties or to float the Willamette River? Whatever your plan includes, remember, the most important part of any plan is safety.

`We all want a summer to remember but those memories shouldn`t include tragedy,` says Jeff DeBo, Health and Safety Director of the Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross. `Most drowning fatalities and accidents can be prevented if we learn to combine safety with fun.`

Center Street NE Closure at Mill Creek Begins June 13th

(SALEM) - A portion of Center Street NE will be closed to through traffic between 17th Street NE and 14th Street NE from June 13th, 2006, until early October 2006, to allow for replacement of the bridge crossing Mill Creek.

Salem to Host Annual Massing of the Colors on Flag Day

(SALEM) - The memories of Oregon servicemembers who have lost their lives during military service in Afghanistan and Iraq will be honored during the annual Flag Day Massing of the Colors and Service Remembrance event at the Oregon State Capitol on Flag Day, June 14th, at 2:30 PM.

Initiated 71 years ago, the Massing of the Colors is a unique, patriotic opportunity to honor America`s flag and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This year`s ceremony is being dedicated to Oregon servicemembers who have lost their lives during military service in Afghanistan and Iraq. Veterans groups and legislators will join with veterans and their families at a special tribute that will include a soloist, a singing group, a military bugler, and an address from Jim Willis, the Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans` Affairs.

Thursday is `Dump the Pump` Day

National Dump the Pump Day is sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association, a non-profit association of more than 1,600 member organizations, including almost 400 public transit agencies.

(SALEM) - Cherriots is joining with other public transportation systems throughout the country to highlight that public transit offers a quick, easy alternative to the high cost of driving.

"With gasoline prices at record levels, many Oregonians are having to change their transit habits," said Transit Development Director John Whittington.

Iraqi Prime Minister: Abu Musab al-Zarqawi Killed

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida-linked militant who led a bloody campaign of suicide bombings, kidnappings and hostage beheadings in Iraq, has been killed in a U.S. air raid north of Baghdad, Iraq's prime minister said Thursday.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said al-Zarqawi was killed Wednesday evening along with seven aides.

The Jordanian-born militant, who was believed to have personally beheaded at least two American hostages, became Iraq's most wanted militant, as notorious as Osama bin Laden, to whom he swore allegiance in 2004. The United States had put a $25 million bounty on al-Zarqawi, the same as bin Laden.

In the past year, he moved his campaign beyond Iraq's borders, claiming to have carried out a Nov. 9th, 2005, triple suicide bombing against hotels in Amman, Jordan, that killed 60 people, as well as other attacks in Jordan and even a rocket attack from Lebanon into northern Israel.

U.S. forces and their allies came close to capturing al-Zarqawi several times since his campaign began in mid-2003.

Study Says Millions Have `Rage` Disorder

(CHICAGO) - To you, that angry, horn-blasting tailgater is suffering from road rage. But doctors have another name for it — intermittent explosive disorder — and a new study suggests it is far more common than they realized, affecting up to 16 million Americans.

"People think it's bad behavior and that you just need an attitude adjustment, but what they don't know ... is that there's a biology and cognitive science to this," said Dr. Emil Coccaro, chairman of psychiatry at the University of Chicago's medical school.

Road rage, temper outbursts that involve throwing or breaking objects and even spousal abuse can sometimes be attributed to the disorder, though not everyone who does those things is afflicted.

Weyerhaeuser Grant to Help Fund Scio High School Scoreboard

(SCIO) - The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation recently presented the Scio School District with a $1,000 grant to help fund an electronic scoreboard for the baseball field at Scio High School.

(MOGADISHU, Somalia) - An Islamic militia with alleged links to al-Qaida seized Somalia's capital Monday after weeks of fighting with U.S.-backed secular warlords, raising fears that the nation could fall under the sway of Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization.

The advance unified the city for the first time in more than a decade and after 15 years of anarchy in this Horn of Africa nation. But it also posed a direct challenge to a fledging U.N.-backed Somali government.
