Senate OKs Border Fence, Backs Citizenship

Willamette Falls Locks Opens Saturday to The Public

Funding for Oregon's historic Willamette Locks has greatly evaporated under the Bush administration, but a collaboration of government and private groups means new hope for one of the state's oldest landmarks on the Willamette River.

(WEST LINN) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that the Willamette Falls Locks will open to the public beginning Saturday, May 20th.

The locks will open from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, May 20th , for the third annual Lock Fest, sponsored by the Willamette Falls Heritage Foundation.

A signing ceremony will take place from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the locks to celebrate the collaborative agreement between the Corps and various local, state and private-sector partners that allows for operation of the locks this year and development of a plan for long-term operations.

Be Aware! Portion of Center Street Will Be Closed This Summer For Bridge Replacement

The new bridge, which crosses Mill Creek, will have two vehicle travel lanes and one left-turn lane, plus new shoulders, curbs, and sidewalks on each side.

(SALEM) - A portion of Center Street NE will be closed to through-traffic between 17th Street NE and 14th Street NE from June 1st, until September 30th, to allow for replacement of the bridge crossing Mill Creek.

The narrow, functionally obsolete bridge built in 1914 is being replaced with a new, wider bridge that will accommodate automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.

Additionally, approximately 500 feet of Center Street NE east of the bridge will be realigned to match the new bridge, along with replacement and relocation of existing utilities.

A temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed to allow pedestrian traffic during the project.

The screening is for children living in West Salem.

(SALEM) - Easter Seals Children`s Guild is offering an early childhood screening for children, from birth to five, and those entering kindergarten next school year.

The screening will be held on Friday, from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Easter Seals Children`s Guild, 290 Moyer Lane NW, in West Salem,

The screening is free and includes: car seat safety information, health screenings, vision, hearing, speech, motor, dental, school readiness, and books.

Childcare will be provided during the screening.

Mollala Man Dies in Single Vehicle Crash

(MOLLALA) - Investigators in Clackamas County say a Mollala man died in a single-vehicle traffic crash Tuesday just before 9:00 PM. 52-year old Luchion Malcom Rogers died at the scene according to investigators.

The wreck happened at S Dickey Prairie Road and S Feyrer Park Road, in Molalla, along the Molalla River.

Rescue personnel arriving on the scene said the lone, male subject left the roadway and was ejected from his vehicle.

This automobile is reported to have gone about ten feet off the roadway when it crashed into a heavily wooded area.

McMinnville Man Arrested on Sex Charges

Investigators fear that there maybe more victims that still have not yet come forward.

(MCMINNVILLE) - A McMinnville man was arrested Tuesday on charges relating to the sexual abuse of a McMinnville youth.

Lt. Ken Summers with the Yamhill County Sheriff`s office says 59 year old David A. Stefan, of 20400 Baker Creek Road, was arrested at 1:04 PM by a multi-agency team of investigators as he arrived at a McMinnville restaurant to meet with the 17-year-old boy.

Simultaneously, a search warrant was executed at his residence...

Voters Support Transit Levy, But Low Voter Turnout Dooms Measure

Salem Mayor Janet Taylor wins a third term in office.

(SALEM) - Marion and Polk county voters supported the Salem-Keizer Transit Districts 5-year local option tax levy, however with only 38 percent of voters in Marion County casting a ballot Tuesday, the measure failed.

The measure needed a double majority to pass.

Cherroits officials said since the measure failed, they will be forced to cut service by 25 percent, and reduce service on some routes.

Salem Mayor Janet Taylor won re-election.

Kulongoski Wins Renomination; Saxton Wins GOP Primary

(PORTLAND) - Gov. Ted Kulongoski scored a surprisingly solid victory in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, despite criticism from traditional allies within his party. He's promising to do the same thing when he faces Republican and independent challengers for governor in the fall.

"I'm going to fight like heck and I'm going to beat both of them," a triumphant Kulongoski said Tuesday night as he looked ahead to a November matchup with Portland lawyer Ron Saxton - who easily won Tuesday's GOP primary - and independent contender Ben Westlund.

In the Democratic race, Kulongoski drew 54 percent percent of the vote, turning back a challenge by former State Treasurer Jim Hill, who got 29 percent, and Peter Sorenson, a Lane County Commissioner, who drew 16 percent.

City Plans to Evict Squatters From Park

(ALBANY – AP) - Residents of a shanty town say they are about to become homeless, thanks to the City of Albany, which has decided to evict them from a park.

Last week the city council gave police authority to evict the squatters from a remote part of Simpson Park. The grant that paid for the park says the city is to manage it to preserve natural features.

Notices are expected this month.

One resident, Diana McFarland, says they aren't homeless and won't be until the city throws them out.
