Pickup Truck Falls Killing Scio Man and Injuring His Son

(SCIO) - A Scio man died and his son was injured Saturday evening when a pickup they were working on fell on them, according to Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller.

42-year old Terry Joseph Hughes and his son, 16-year old Nicholas Hughes, were working on a pickup that was suspended above them on a vehicle hoist.

At approximately 6:50 PM Saturday, the support arms on the hoist collapsed and the vehicle landed on both of them, killing Terry and injuring Nicholas. Nicholas sustained injuries to his hip and was transported to Lebanon Community Hospital.

Fatal Traffic Crash on Wallace Road North of Salem

(West Salem) - A Salem man died early Monday morning after his vehicle left the highway, struck the front porch area of a residence and rolled over several times.

Around 1:40 AM, a 1985 Chevrolet pickup driven by 53-year old James M. Swearingen of Salem was northbound on Highway 221- Wallace Road, near milepost 10.

Police say his pickup left the roadway, struck the front porch area of a house located at 24900 Wallace Road rolling over several times and stopping in a field next to the residence.

Governor Faces Tough Re-Election Bid

(SALEM) - In a year when Democrats are considered in a good position to take control of more than half the nation's governorships, one of their worries lies in Oregon

Even some of Gov. Ted Kulongoski's own Democratic allies say he often has been disappointing. Many voters say the centrist lacks pizzaz, charisma and big ideas.

The governor admits no policy failures. But, with a primary election coming up, he does acknowledge a need to do a better job of touting his accomplishments: seeing Oregon out of a recession, reforming the public employee retirement system and creating thousands of construction jobs through a transportation program.

Vehicle Crash on I-5 May be Alcohol Related

(KEIZER) - A rollover crash on Interstate-5 Sunday afternoon sent two people to the hospital, one with critical injuries. Police say alcohol could have been a factor.

Around 2:00 PM Sunday, police say a red 1994 Ford Ranger pickup northbound on I-5 near milepost 261 attempted to pass another vehicle, but clipped the second vehicle's bumper in the process.

Sgt. Dale Young with Oregon State Police says that as the rear of the Ford Ranger hit the front end of the vehicle it was passing, "It caused the Ford Ranger to lose control and roll over, Covering all 3 lanes of the highway, coming to rest on the right hand shoulder of the road."

Oregon`s Ballot Returns Remaining Steady

(SALEM) - The Secretary of State`s office has released real time unofficial ballot returns as of 11:30 AM today, based on ballots scanned into the new Oregon Centralized Voter Registration system. In Marion County officials are predicating a turnout of only 33.3 percent.

Statewide ballot returns so far: 29.3%.

Report: Military Ignoring Mental Illness

22 U.S. troops took their own lives in 2005, an investigation by the Hartford Courant revealed that one in five combat related deaths in Iraq is suicide.

(HARTFORD, Conn. AP) - U.S. military troops with severe psychological problems have been sent to Iraq or kept in combat, even when superiors have been aware of signs of mental illness, a newspaper reported for Sunday editions.

The Hartford Courant, citing records obtained under the federal Freedom of Information Act and more than 100 interviews of families and military personnel, reported numerous cases in which the military failed to follow its own regulations in screening, treating and evacuating mentally unfit troops from Iraq.

Keizer Fire District Hosting EMS Open House

(KEIZER) - The Keizer Fire District is hosting their annual EMS open house on Monday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

The event will include the landing of a LifeFlight helicopter, free blood pressure check, see the Capitol Auto Group`s racing dragster, and a bicycle obstacle course.

Visitors can also checkout district fire engines and ambulances.

(WOODBURN) - Woodburn police have identified the girl who apparently drowned on Friday in a city pool.

Governor Asks President Bush to Extend Medicare Enrollment Deadline

The new prescription drug benefit is the largest revamping of Medicare in the program's 40 year history.

(SALEM) - Governor Ted Kulongoski has sent a letter to President Bush asking him to extend the deadline for seniors to apply for the new Medicare drug plan.

Citing the confusing nature of the plans, as well as the fact that the federal government has not been able to provide accurate advice for many of the seniors who have sought help, Governor Kulongoski said that the deadline should be extended to January 2007.

95% of the Election Results are in

(SALEM) - Janet Taylor`s 63.46 gives her a solid lead in her attempt to retain the position of Mayor in the city of Salem. For the Ward 2 City Councilor position, Laura Tesler is enjoying a comfortable 55.10% with 95% of the ballots in, leading Jim Randall`s 44.81%.

95 percent of the voting precincts have tabulated votes for the May 16th Primary Election. Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski defeated his challengers. Kulongoski will now go on to battle; Republican Ron Saxton, who sailed easily past his challengers pulling 43% over Kevin Mannix who carried 30%.

The low voter turnout was not a friend to a measure that would have increased funding the Salem Transit District, which had hoped to upgrade their fleet, especially with a gas crunch sending increasing numbers to public transportation.
