PETA Demonstrators Protest KFC in Salem (VIDEO)

To ensure that they gained people`s attention, PETA Campaign Coordinator Lindsay Rajt donned a yellow bikini, and gained her objective.

(SALEM) - Members of the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, demonstrated in front of the Salem KFC restaurant on Lancaster Drive Thursday.

They say the chain`s practices aren`t ethical. Without going into too many details, PETA Campaign Coordinator Lindsay Rajt described their complaints against this fast food chain, `I'm here as one chick sticking up for other chicks. Getting the message out that we're only asking KFC to take the scientific advice of their own animal welfare advisors."

"After you see, behind the scenes, what really happens to these chickens, anybody that cares about animals would want to be out here. They're scalded alive, they're kept in sheds of 30-50,000 birds."

PETA has plenty of critics. Some people go so far as to call them a terrorist group. These PETA members and supporters say they are simply asking the huge corporation, KFC, to kill their chickens in a humane manner.

Early Morning Crash at Highway 99W and Highway 22 Intersection Leaves One Man Dead

(RICKREALL) - Oregon State Police arrested a Dallas-area man Thursday morning on numerous criminal charges related to a fatal traffic crash early this morning at the intersection of Highway 99W and Highway 22.

State Police Spokesman Greg Hastings says the investigation is continuing into the fatal crash that resulted in the death of a Silverton-area man, and alcohol is alleged to be a contributing factor.

Dogs Rule, Humans Play

(LINCOLN CITY) - Dogs of all kinds will rule the day, while their humans play, at the Mutt Masters Dog Show and Olympics on Saturday, May 20th at Taft Middle School in Lincoln City.

Registration for the event begins at 11:00 AM with contests from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM. Proceeds from Mutt Masters will benefit the Lincoln County Animal Shelter and the Oregon Coast Humane Society.

Salem Fire Captain Receives the Gerry Frank Award for Meritorious Achievement.

(SALEM) - Salem Fire Captain Paul Telfer was honored at the Salem Professional Fire Fighters Retirement dinner by being the recipient of the Gerry Frank Award for Meritorious Achievement.

Captain Telfer is an 18-year veteran with the Salem Fire Department. Fire Chief Mike Knode says that during his career, he has exhibited the highest standards of excellence and professionalism.

Fire Departmetn Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says that in addition to his demanding duties as a company officer, "He has gone above and beyond with his accomplishments in the areas of public education, public service and training."

Head-on Collision Kills One Person South of Corvallis

(CORVALLIS) - State troopers are continuing their investigation into a two-vehicle traffic crash Wednesday morning that resulted in the death of one person on Highway 99W south of Corvallis.

The victim's name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

Around 9:00 AM, a 2001 Toyota Camry was southbound on Highway 99W near milepost 87 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound 1986 International truck towing a single semi-trailer.

Polk County Holding Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

(DALLAS) - Polk County residents can get rid of household hazardous waste Saturday between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM at the Polk Count Public Works facility.

Along with the cities of Dallas, Independence, Monmouth and Salem, Polk County is co-sponsoring a household hazardous waste collection event from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday.

The event allows residents to bring their hazardous household chemicals such as unwanted pesticides, herbicides, oil-based paint, acids, caustic cleaners, and other toxic household chemicals for free disposal.

WOU Hosts Poet Karen Holmberg

(MONMOUTH) - Western Oregon University will host poet Karen Holmberg will read from her collection "The Perseids" on Thursday, May 18th at 4:30 PM in room 107 of Hamersly Library.

Holmberg is winner of the 1996 Discovery/"The Nation" Prize and twice winner of the Academy of American Poets Prize. Her work has been published in "The Paris Review," "Slate" and "The Nation," among other journals.
