FTC Launches Nationwide ID Theft Education Campaign

The FTC and the Justice Department will send “AvoID Theft: Deter, Detect, Defend� education kits to 4,500 victim advocates across the country.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - You can take steps to minimize your risk of becoming a victim of identity theft.

That is the message of a nationwide education program launched on Wednesday by the Federal Trade Commission: `AvoID Theft: Deter, Detect, Defend.`

Crash on 99W Near Corvallis Claims Life

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State Police troopers are on the scene of a fatal traffic crash on Highway 99W south of Corvallis.

The crash happened at the intersection of Highway 99W and SW Airport Avenue.

Three Die on Motorboat in Coos Bay

(COOS BAY AP) - Three people aboard a 16-foot motor boat died Tuesday when it capsized in Coos Bay after getting hit by two waves.

The victims, two men and a woman, have NOT been immediately identified.

Coast Guard officials called off a search for more victims. Authorities were able to verify through calls to relatives that only three people were aboard.

John Whittington with Cherriots says ridership is up nearly seven percent over last year, and the number of first time riders has doubled.

Many Struggling Schools Skirt Major Makeover

(WASHINGTON – AP) - Falling short of requirements under President Bush`s education law, about 1,750 U.S. schools have been ordered into radical `restructuring,` subject to mass firings, closure, state takeover or other moves aimed at wiping their slates clean.

Many are finding resolutions short of such drastic measures. But there is growing concern that the number of schools in serious trouble under the No Child Left Behind law is rising sharply — up 44 percent over the past year alone — and is expected to swell by thousands in the next few years.

Emergency Medical Services Week Open House Scheduled in Keizer

(KEIZER) - The Keizer Fire District will hold its annual Emergency Medical Services Open House and Safety Fair on Monday, May 15th. The Open House and Safety Fair will be held at the District`s Fire Station at 661 Chemawa Rd. NE in Keizer from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

This Open House and Safety Fair will feature the equipment and services provided by the Keizer Fire District and fourteen other agencies and organizations that provide emergency services and safety messages to area residents. Visitors can receive safety information on a variety of subjects, meet people with expertise in many life safety fields and enjoy free refreshments.

National Average Gasoline Price Dips; Oregon Statewide Average Climbs

"It appears prices may be settling, although we did see a fairly substantial increase in Oregon average prices during the past week. The statewide average dipped overnight, and that's consistent with the national average holding steady, lower crude prices on Monday. We won't call it a trend just yet, but optimism that we'll see prices moving downward." Elliot Eki Oregon AAA

(SALEM) - In the past week, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline dipped by almost 2-cents per gallon, while in Oregon it gained more than 7-cents per gallon to a current average of $3.04. Salem`s current average of $2.98 is the lowest in the state, with Eugene residents still paying the highest average, $3.07. Portland residents are paying $2.99.

"On the bright side, we saw crude oil close Monday below $70 per barrel for the first time in several weeks," said AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Elliott Eki. "The statewide average gasoline price is also down one-tenth cent since Monday. While that's not much, it is some cause for optimism that prices might begin falling soon."

Update on Fatal Crash Near Government Camp

(GOVERNMENT CAMP) - Oregon State Police crash reconstructionists are continuing the investigation into Sunday afternoon's fatal traffic crash that resulted in the deaths of four people on Highway 26 about eight miles east of Government Camp. Investigators say some witnesses have been in contact for statements, and additional witnesses are asked to call to provide information related to this investigation.

The fatal crash occurred Sunday, May 7th, at approximately 1:20 PM on Highway 26 near milepost 63. Oregon State Police, ODOT and Hoodland Fire Department responded to the crash.

Preliminary investigation indicates a black 1999 BMW four-door driven by 22-year old andrey A. Blashishin of northeast Portland, was eastbound on Highway 26 when police say it crossed the centerline and crashed into a westbound silver 2004 Dodge Intrepid driven by 55-year old Gary Dean Matlick of Bend.

City of Salem Promotes National Drinking Water Week

(SALEM) - The City of Salem will join other American water utilities to celebrate "The Wonder of Water" during National Drinking Water Week, May 7th-13th, 2006. The nationwide campaign is an effort to remind citizens that water is a valuable resource to be protected and used wisely.

Salem's drinking water is some of the best in the nation and water customers pay only one penny for four gallons of tap water.
