Kroc Center Will be Gift for Generations

Before it is complete, the community center will occupy 8 acres and also will include a 25-acre nature park that the city of Salem will build.

(SALEM) - People who live in the Salem area were given an amazing gift Monday. That gift will come in the form of a new community center and it will be one with few rivals, according to Randy Curtis with the Salvation Army.

Sheriff Candidate on Leave; Troopers to Probe Schooling Claims

(CORVALLIS – AP) - An officer campaigning for Benton County sheriff has been put on paid leave while the Oregon State Police investigates allegations that he lied about his educational background.

A newspaper reported last week that Benton County sergeant Jack Burright bought a college degree from an unaccredited university and that on at least five applications indicated that he had graduated from Corvallis High School in 1985 when he had not.

Cause of Fish Kill in Mid-Valley Creek Under Investigation

The DEQ and ODFW are asking for the public's help in gathering information about the possible release of toxic material into the creek.

(LEBANON) - The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife are investigating the source of a fish kill that occurred earlier this week in Burkhart Creek between Lebanon and Albany.

ODFW fish biologist Karen Hans says a fish count could not be completed due to lack of access to the creek, but she estimated the number to be between dozens and hundreds.

The dead fish included several species at all life stages.

Large Oak Tree Near Library Entrance to be Removed on Monday

The oak exhibits multiple signs of structural problems that are said to reduce the stability of the tree.

(SALEM) - City of Salem parks crews will be removing a large Oregon White Oak located west of the south entrance to the Salem Public Library on Monday.

They say problems prevent any remedial measures that would extend the usable life of this tree.

They say the only option is to remove the tree for public safety.

Drowning Claims Dayton Youth

(DAYTON) - A 14 year old Dayton teen died Friday evening after trying to cross the Yamhill River at the Dayton Boat Ramp. Shortly before 8:45 PM, Tony Torres and another 13 year old Dayton youth decided to swim across the Yamhill River to the opposite shore. Partially across, Torres grew tired. The other called to him to float. Removing some clothing, the 13 year old made it across and scrambled up the steep embankment. The other disappeared into the river in the gathering twilight.

Yamhill County Sheriff's deputies along with the Oregon State Police, Dayton, McMinnville and Newberg Fire Department apparatus and personnel quickly responded to the scene. Yamhill County Crime Victim Assistance personnel and the Dayton Fire Department chaplain assisted family members.

On Friday, the average price in Salem is at $2.97.9. One month ago the price was $2.43.0 and one year ago the price was $2.41.0.

Produced by Oregon Sea Grant, the DVD highlights colorful, computer animations of the offshore region created by scientists at OSU and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
