Underage Drinking: Parents Talk About the Risks to Kids

(SALEM) - A dozen parents sat down recently to talk about underage drinking. "Up until they are 12 or 13," one of the moms said without intended humor, "they do what you say. Then they stop."

In fact, research shows that most young children view drinking alcohol as wrong. That does change as they grow older, when a third of Oregon eighth-grade girls say they have consumed alcohol in the past month and one in 10 of both girls and boys say they have engaged in binge drinking during the prior 30 days.

Head of OLCC Charged With Drunken Driving, Resigns

(PORTLAND AP) - The administrator of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission resigned today, five days after being after being arrested and charged with drunken and reckless driving.

Authorities sasy Teresa Kaiser's blood-alcohol level was measured at twice the legal limit for driving.

A spokesman for Governor Kulongoski says Kaiser e-mailed her resignation to members of the O-L-C-C board of directors this morning.

Detectives Seize Drugs, Guns From Residence, 5-year-old Child Taken Into Protective Custody

(SALEM) - Marion County Street Crimes Detectives, assisted by Salem police and Oregon State Police investigators, served a search warrant at 4527 Boulder Dr SE in Salem as part of an ongoing investigation on Wednesday night.

Sheriff`s spokesman Kevin Rau said detectives arrested 30-year-old Manuel Morales-Beiza and 21-year-old Obet Gomez-Beiza.

Investigators seized 2.5 ounces of methamphetamine and 5 ounces of heroin from the home.

Safety Town and Cautious Kids Program Registration Begin Monday

(SALEM) - Registration for the Salem-Keizer School Districts popular summer safety programs begins Monday.

Two different programs are offered: Safety Town and Cautious Kids.

Safety Town, for ages 4 and 5, is an eight-day program covering the major areas of early safety education.

It features a miniature town, complete with streets, intersections, crosswalks and buildings.

Wyden Ties up Senate in Protest of Oil Subsidies

(WASHINGTON, D.C. AP) - Oregon Senator Ron Wyden tied up the Senate for more than four-and-a-half hours Thursday trying to force a vote on energy.

Wyden wants to make energy companies pay royalties on hundreds of leases of federal land.

Companies do not have to pay royalties now under a program put in place when energy prices were low.

Analysis Finds Salem-Keizer is Lowest Spending District on Central Administration

The analysis also found that Salem-Keizer is at or above average in spending on instructional and support services to students.

(SALEM) - A recent analysis of school districts around the State found that Salem-Keizer was the lowest spending school district on central administration in 2004-05 when compared to Oregon districts with 6,500 or more students.

This independent analysis conducted by Clem Lausberg, Ph'D, looked at expenditures of school districts in Oregon by using information from the Oregon Department of Education Data Base Initiative.

Albany Station Earns Downtown Excellence Award

(ALBANY) - Albany Station, the City of Albany`s recently renovated multimodal transportation center, has received a 2006 Award in Downtown Excellence from the Oregon Downtown Development Association.

The Albany center received an award for excellence in transit/transportation, the only award in that category.
The Albany multimodal transportation center consolidates park-and-ride, bus transfers, and passenger train service in an attractive and period-appropriate gateway to Albany`s downtown.

New Report Examines Residential Sources of Nitrate in Southern Willamette Valley Groundwater

The report, by the Oregon State University Extension Well Water Program, recommends actions that could reduce nitrate from residential sources in the area.

(CORVALLIS) - In 2004, high concentrations of nitrate in groundwater in the southern Willamette Valley prompted the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality to declare a Groundwater Management Area between Eugene and Albany.

The southern Willamette Valley is only the third Groundwater Management Area to be designated in Oregon.

Grant for Old Salem Railroad Bridge Approved

(SALEM) - The City of Salem has received word that its grant request to the Recreational Trails Program for $97,000 for the Union Street Railroad Bridge project has been approved for funding.

Recreational Trails Program funds, which are passed through to the states by the Federal Highway Administration for development and repair of trails and trail-supporting facilities, are administered in this state by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

Small Quake Shakes Central Part of The Willamette Valley

(SCOTT MILLS AP) - A small earthquake rattled the central part of the Willamette River Valley this morning.

The quake was a preliminary magnitude three, probably triggered by a fault that produces many similar shakings.

James Roddey is earth sciences information officer for the Oregon Department of Geology. He says that area is notorious for many small earthquakes.
