Looming WOU Strike is Off

(Monmouth) - Newsradio 1190 KEX says the 220 staff members at WOU are getting what they have been asking for.

A strike set for Wednesday at Western Oregon University is off. Both sides sat at a bargaining table over the weekend with the mediator and hammered out a new deal.

(McMINNVILE) - Evergreen International Aviation based in McMinnville will start demonstrating its firefighting 747 Supertanker during an 11 state tour that begins this month.

Salem Camp to Help Kids With Family Members Who Are Deployed

The National Military Family Association estimates that over 115,000 children in the U.S. have a family member that is deployed.

(SALEM) - A free week-long summer camp will put together children of deployed soldiers to help them deal with the stress associated with having a family member serving during wartime.

Operation Purple, is open to 100 children in grades three through eight.

Campers can enjoy swimming, canoeing, adventure swings, archery, crafts, nightly campfires and all of the amenities to make this a memorable summer adventure.

Math Competition at McKay High This Weekend

(SALEM) - McKay High School will host the annual 24-Challenge Competition this Saturday this Saturday April 8th. The contest will begin at approximately 9:00 AM and will conclude with trophy and ribbon presentations by noon.

Around 175 Salem area fourth and fifth-graders will compete in the tournament with at least 125 McKay students facilitating the event.

Salem Concert Band Presents Songs of the American West

(SALEM) - The Historic Elsinore Theatre, the Salem Concert Band will present a musical showcase at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 7th entitled `Songs of the American West` under the direction of conductor John Skelton.

Classic `cowboy` tunes, such as Home on the Range and Turkey in the Straw, will be presented by the band, as well as Western-themed pieces written during the 1950s and `60s, such as Santa Fe Saga (1955) by Martin Gould and Laredo Paso Doble (1963) by Clifton Williams. Another special work on the program is Barn Dance and Cowboy Hymn by Philip Sparke, which transports the listener to a scene wherein a rowdy dance and a church service have been seemingly double-booked in the same barn on the same evening, and the experience is at once entertaining and lively, spiritual and serene.

The Salem Concert Band is also pleased to present Haboo, a Native American-inspired piece by Pacific Lutheran University professor and composer Gregory Youtz, which received its world premiere last year at the University of Washington...

Oregon Gold Star Families to be Honored

(SALEM) - Oregon Gold Star Families will be honored at a special dinner at the Portland Airport Shilo Inn, on May 7th, 2006. The Oregon Department of Veterans` Affairs will join the Coalition of Troop Support, the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom War Memorial Fund, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, Marshall Tall Eagle II, Inc., and veterans` organizations to honor families at the event.

Gold Star families are those who have suffered the loss of a spouse, son, or daughter as a casualty, killed, captured, missing in action, or as a result of illness or injury received through engagement in the U.S. Armed Forces in WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other conflicts and strategic areas.

New Professor is Specialist in Foreign Policy and Military History

(SALEM) - A 34-year-old doctoral student whose specialties are American foreign policy and military history has been hired as a full-time professor at Corban College.

After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska this summer, Scot D. Bruce will begin teaching classes at Corban this fall. He is Corban's third full-time social science faculty member, joining Professors Robert Mathisen and John Scott.

"This is wonderful for Corban. We're continuing to move forward, to grow and to attract quality candidates," Mathisen said.
