Police Make Arrest in Salem Grocery Store Parking Lot Robberies

(SALEM) - Authorities in Salem have made an arrest in a string of robbery and kidnapping incidents that occurred last month in northeast Salem grocery store parking lots.

Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says detectives arrested 18-year-old Miguel Angel Mendoza-Castro at his home on Friday.

Kohlmeyer says Mendoza-Castro approached his victims at the Lancaster Food-4-Less and at the Lancaster Grocery Outlet and demanded money.

Salem Fire Department Receives Grant For Bi-Lingual Fire Safety Education Program

Teaching fire prevention from an early age will pay off for a lifetime

(SALEM) - The Salem Fire Department has been awarded a $125,000 grant from FEMA to create a bi-lingual fire and life safety education program. The grant will allow the department to provide new tools that will help reach the Salem-area Hispanic community.

The Salem-Keizer School District says that over twenty-five percent of the children in the district are Hispanic.
Alfredo Mendez, a fire suppression graduate, has been hired to get the program started and is starring in a children`s fire safety video designed for K through 2ND graders delivered in the Spanish culture.

Wirth to Change Plea on Thursday

(SALEM) - Former Democratic State Representative Kelly Wirth from Corvallis is scheduled to be back in a Marion County courtroom on Thursday for a change of plea hearing.

The 40-year-old resigned after she was charged with possession of methamphetamine. Police say they found a small amount of the drug after searching her vehicle after she was run-down outside the Capitol last year.

State Trooper in Unmarked Car Arrests Motorcyclist For Riding at 125 MPH

(SALEM) - An Aurora man was arrested Tuesday morning north of Salem on Interstate 5 after an Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper in an unmarked ADEP (Aggressive Driving Enforcement Plan) patrol car observed him operating his motorcycle in a reckless manner at speeds in excess of 125 mph.

This was the third driver arrested by the trooper using the unmarked patrol car during the last week driving 115-mph or faster.

On April 4th at approximately 9:20 AM, OSP Trooper Sean Swisher was
patrolling southbound on Interstate 5 near Woodburn when he spotted a 2003 Suzuki SV1000 motorcycle approaching from behind at a high rate of speed. After the motorcycle passed the unmarked OSP Chevrolet Camaro ADEP patrol vehicle, Trooper Swisher allegedly paced it at speeds in excess of 125 mph.

Suspect Arrested in 1980 Lake Oswego Double Homicide Case

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - A Portland man was arrested Tuesday morning for charges relating to a double homicide which occurred in Lake Oswego in 1980.

National Public Health Week is April 3-9

(SALEM) - This is National Public Health Week, April 3rd-9th, and the Marion County Health Department is marking the occasion by pointing out some of the programs it conducts to protect the public's health.

Electric Contact Accidents in Oregon Rise in 2005

(SALEM) - The number of people injured in electric contact accidents rose slightly in 2005 compared with the year before but none were fatal according to an annual report released by the Oregon Public Utility Commission.

Of the 14 people who were injured most were hurt on the job.

That is in keeping with historical trends since 1997.

Eight required hospitalization, six were considered minor injuries.

Library Book Kits Available to Local Book Clubs

Kits are available for use on a first-come, first-served basis

(SALEM) - Salem Public Library Foundation, the Oregon Center for the Book, and the Salem Public Library have teamed up to develop a group of Book Club Kits that are now available to area book clubs.

Each kit offers 10-12 copies of a single book, author information, and suggested discussion questions.

North Salem Announces Hall-of-Fame Inductees

(SALEM) - On April 27th, North Salem High School will induct sixteen outstanding graduates and distinguished staff into its newly created Hall of Fame.

The event, which coincides with the school's 100TH graduating-class, includes a 6:00 PM recognition dinner and social at Mission Mill.

Staff, Viking graduates and the general public are encouraged to attend the event.

Garage Fire Destroys Classic Cars

Fire destroys two Mercedes Benz automobiles, one dating back to 1932.

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters were called out Sunday night just before 10:00 PM to a report of a fire in a detached two car garage at 2675 Lansing Ave NE.

Fire Department Spokesman Joe Parrott says initial reports indicated the blaze was well underway, "The garage was fully involved in fire, so a second alarm was called."

"On arrival firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which involved the entire garage."

Parrott says the fire destroyed two classic cars, a 1932 Mercedes coupe and a 1964 Mercedes sedan. The fire also heavily damaged the garage but did not extend to the adjacent house. There were no injuries.
