Child Abuse Prevention Month Begins With Rally on Oregon State Capitol Steps

(SALEM) - A Child Abuse Prevention Rally on the capitol steps Tuesday will mark the beginning of Child Abuse Prevention Month activities in Marion County. The rally will be held on Tuesday, April 4th, from noon to 1:00 PM on the steps of the Oregon State Capitol.

In 2004, the most recent year for which statistics are available, there were 10,622 confirmed cases of child abuse in the state of Oregon, almost half of which were under the age of six. Of those 10,622 victims, 1,306 were in Marion County.

Eight children died as a result of child abuse and neglect in Oregon in 2004.

OSP Troopers Cite Three Drivers Near Albany For Going Over 100 MPH

Between 2000 and 2004, troopers cited more the 2,600 drivers for going 100 mph or faster.

(ALBANY) - Sunday was a busy day on Oregon highways with thousands of motorists returning from spring break activities, but it didn't keep 3 drivers from traveling at over 100 mph on Interstate 5 near Albany.

One of the drivers went to jail after the trooper determined he was wanted on three warrants and his driving privileges were revoked.

On Sunday, at approximately 7:27 AM, Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Hales stopped a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 225 after detecting the car going 107 mph.

(SALEM) - The Salem-Keizer School District announced on Tuesday the hiring of Dr. Sandra Husk as the district`s new superintendent.

Husk was selected after two weeks of interviews and a visit to the district last week.

Husk has more than 25 years of educational experience, and was the superintendent of Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Salem Police Detective Wins Auto Theft Investigator of the Year

Detective Mike Bethers "bait car" program contributed to a three percent reduction in auto thefts in Salem between 2004 and 2005

(SALEM) - Salem police detective Mike Bethers has received the Auto Theft Investigator of the Year award.

The award is presented by the Western States Auto Theft Investigators (WSATI) and is given to the officer, detective or person that has done the most to further the effort to reduce auto thefts for the State of Oregon.

In 2004, Detective Mike Bethers began researching the current Salem Police Bait Car program and obtained federal grant money and donations from State Farm Insurance, Farmers Insurance and National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) to purchase cars and equipment.

Developer Wants Hotel Next to Troubled Oregon Garden

Making the Oregon Garden a destination for a larger market is priority.

(SILVERTON AP) - A California hotel developer will take over operations of the Oregon Garden tourist attraction in hopes of rescuing it, according to an interim agreement.

Moonstone Hotel Properties plans a 100-unit hotel overlooking the Silverton attraction.

"It's the hotel that's going to make the money, not the garden," said John Lattimer, Marion County's chief administrative officer.

Marion County and Silverton officials said the deal might be the garden's best chance to overcome the garden's financial problems, although major creditors, including the city and county, might not be repaid in full for many years.

(SALEM) - Salem's own basketball team, the Salem Stampede, raised their record to 2-0 on the season with a crowd pleasing win on opening night at the Salem Armory during a 134-111 victory over interstate rival Central Oregon.

The Hotshots, 1-4 on the year, were led by John Randolph`s 31 points.

The Stampede are tied with the Portland Chinooks for the top spot in the IBL`s Western Division.

Salem Community Gives New Momentum to Teen Court Program

(SALEM) - The Boys & Girls Club of Salem will host a luncheon on Tuesday to get local community members involved in the Marion County Teen Court program.

Veterans, Soldiers, Salem Businesses Join Together For Operation Legacy

The whole community is invited to participate in the event

(SALEM) - 50 Salem active-duty soldiers will feel especially `cared for` when they receive specially-created packages from some Salem citizens.

On Wednesday, Madrona Hills retirement community veterans, along with Oregon Army National Guard soldiers and Salem-area businesses, will join forces in Operation Legacy, to create and assemble care packages for the active-duty soldiers serving in Iraq that hail from Salem.

Twenty-five percent of the residents from Madrona Hills are veterans who have served in all branches of the military from WWII to Operation Desert Storm.

The event, will also feature a dessert extravaganza and patriotic music by Madrona Hills` very own "Kitchen Band."
Operation Legacy, is also open to the public, and runs from 2:30 until 4:00 PM.

The Stampede is Ready to Play

Central Oregon comes to Salem March 31st, where the first-ever professional basketball game will be played in Salem, and broadcast LIVE on KWVT channel 52 (UHF).

(SALEM) - The Salem Stampede, the city`s first professional basketball team kicked-off their first season on Saturday March 18th.

The Stampede is one of seven expansion markets added to the IBL-International Basketball League for the 2006 season. The league anticipates a total of twenty-five total teams for this season comprised of teams from all over the country. The IBL, which is based out of Portland, Oregon, is going into its second season as a professional basketball league. The new league boasts a philosophy that combines basketball with, music, concerts, comedy and other entertainment options that will entertain the entire family.
