Oregon Coast Guard Station Receives Five Hoax Calls This Month

(NEWPORT AP) - Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay has received five hoax calls this month.

The calls received in Yaquina Bay came in the form of a "Mayday" call for help on V-H-F channel 16. That's the emergency channel that is monitored by the Coast Guard 24-hours a day.

Hoax calls also cost taxpayers thousands of dollars annually. Each hoax call can result in the Coast Guard launching ships, boats and aircraft that could otherwise be used in legitimate search and rescue efforts.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Blue ribbons waving in the wind are reminders of the children abused every year.

(SALEM) - PGE crews have hung 10,622 blue ribbon from the tree branches outside the Marion County Courthouse, to remind passers-by of the ongoing problem of child abuse and neglect in Oregon.

The ribbons represent one confirmed case of child abuse or neglect in the state.

According to data from the child abuse and neglect coalition in 2005, over 1,000 children in Salem were taken into protective custody.

Suspects, Vehicle Sought in Salem Armed Robbery, Carjacking

Police ask for help in finding robbery suspects

(SALEM) - Authorities are asking for the public`s help in locating a man and a woman, plus locating a victim`s vehicle from an armed robbery and carjacking incident that occurred Monday in northeast Salem.

Sheriff`s spokesman Jeff Wheeler says the victim was approached by a man in the parking lot of the Emperor`s Palace Restaurant on Center Street.

The suspect then pointed a handgun at the victim and made him drive his car to the 7200 block of State Street, where the suspect made the victim undress to his underwear and left him along side the roadway.

Salem`s Newest Park Named After Geer Family

Early Oregon Governor is remembered.

(SALEM) - The Salem City Council voted unanimously Monday night to name Salem`s newest park after the pioneer Geer family.

The 26-acre park, located on State Street and Hawthorne Avenue is set to open next month and features two baseball and soccer fields. A decommissioned railroad line known as the Geer Line runs along the parks property.

Theodore Thurston Geer served as Oregon`s governor from 1899 to 1903.

Oregon`s Most Notorious Prisoner Dies

Serial killer Jerry Brudos died Tuesday of natural causes at the age of 67.

(SALEM) - Jerome `Jerry` Brudos pleaded guilty in 1969 to the strangulation murders of Jan Susan Whitney, Karen Elena Sprinker and Linda Dawn Salee. When Brudos`s crimes were revealed, the news shocked the people of Oregon and beyond. He was convicted for murdering three young women in his Salem home, near the State Hospital, and he did it all without ever alerting his wife to the devious acts he performed inside his home-based workshop. His disdain for women was not lost on his victims. He mutilated and cut up the bodies and dumped all three corpses into local rivers.

Oregon did not have the death penalty at the time. He was serving three life sentences when he died.

Truck Crashes Into 2 Parked Cars

Accidents happen when you least expect them

(SALEM) - The Salem Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident at the 1700 block of Commercial Street SE on Monday, March 27th at 3:00 PM. First arriving fire fighter/paramedics discovered a Ford F150 truck had collided with two parked cars.

The driver and two occupants, two young children, were not injured due to the accident. The driver stated he started coughing and must have blacked out for a moment.

Missing Couple Goes Missing Again

The Higginbotham grandparents have vanished again.

(PORTLAND - AP) - But for their wrong turn in the mountains of Southern Oregon, the case of Elbert and Becky Higginbotham might well have stayed in an in-basket of the busy and cash-strapped office of the sheriff of Navajo County, Arizona.
Eleven months ago, they'd been caught with a small amount of methamphetamine and a shotgun, deputies said, but they agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Then they disappeared.

(SALEM) - Oregon Food Bank has received a number of complaints from people receiving unsolicited text messages on their cell phones from senders claiming to raise funds on behalf of OFB.

The names associates with these messages are coolcasino.tv, westcoastwagers.net, which claims to be a subsidiary of World Wide Media, Corp.

Oregon Food Bank has not authorized this promotion, say officials, who add that Oregon Food Bank has no relationship with the senders or with this activity.

Oregon Food Bank has strict policies to protect donor information. Oregon Food Bank policy prohibits selling, exchanging or releasing data.

Boats Need Registration Year Round

(SALEM) - Unregistered boat owners beware, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies are out walking the docks at marinas, looking for boats that have expired registration decals.
