Schools Recycle Over 61,000 Old Voter Registration Cards

(SALEM) - Secretary of State Bill Bradbury today announced that 25 schools in nine counties participated in the old voter registration card recycling program.

Over 61,000 old voter registration cards were collected and recycled by Oregon public schools. Each school that
participated will receive a base payment of $25, plus one penny for every old registration card collected.

"I'm proud to partner with Oregon schools to provide them with a few extra dollars and to ensure that people registering to vote use the new form that meets all the federal requirements," said Bradbury.

Willamina Man Hits $5.4 Million Jackpot

(WILLAMINA AP) - A modest mill worker from Willamina won five-point-four million dollars in a Megabucks drawing.

Ryan Hicinbothom bought the ticket at his local Thriftway and didn't check the numbers until two weeks later.

Friends say it couldn't have happened to a nicer person. The 39-year-old works hard at the mill to support his two sons, who all live in a rented trailer home outside of town.

Hicinbothom went to work as usual after he found out about his winnings. But he says he will quit the 17-dollar-an-hour job, the highest-paying job he's ever had.

Clogged Stormdrains May Lead to Fines

(SALEM) - A proposed ordinance would allow Marion County to recoup costs associated with blocked road drains.

Marion County Public Works Director Jim Sears says recent heavy rains are causing erosion run-off that is filling county culverts, leading to flooded roads and blocked drains.

Sears estimates the county spends between $5,000 and $20,000 a year cleaning out the drains.

If commissioners approve the ordinance, it would allow the county to cite and fine landowners a maximum of $500 per day if they refuse to clean their drains of debris and silt from erosion.

Legislator Web Pages Temporarily Shut Down

Legislator Web pages have been shut down due to links to non-government sites

(SALEM AP) - State officials have temporarily shut down legislators' individual Web pages. The action was taken because of their links to non-government Web sites, such as a local business or a newspaper.

An opinion from the Legislative Counsel has recommended allowing only links to local, state or federal government sites. It says other links could result in violations of election and ethics laws.

Blog Posting on Illegal Immigration Ignites Tiff

Oregon's illegal immigration debate flared anew this week.

(SALEM – AP) - A political commentary by Secretary of State Bill Bradbury's communications director, Anne Martens, said immigration reforms were being promoted by people who are "anti-immigrant" and "anti-Mexican." She said it is time to call it what it is: racism.

Representative Linda Flores of Clackamas who is advocating a tougher stand against undocumented foreigners contends that she and others have been branded as "racists".

Martens, meanwhile, is unapologetic and says the view is her own and not job-related.

(SALEM) - The Salem Police Department is holding its monthly community conversation program to increase the communication between the Hispanic community and Salem law enforcement officials.

The program is conducted in Spanish and also serves as a way to have increased understanding about each culture.

The program, known as Pláticas con la Policía, covers different topics regarding the various services provided by the police department and their policies and procedures.

Salem Stampede LIVE Television Broadcast

(SALEM) - KWVT Salem, channel 52, in cooperation with Majestic Video and Photo, Full Access Sports, and the Salem Stampede will broadcast the Stampede home opener LIVE Friday, March 31st.

Mannix Campaign Calls Saxton Campaign/Grand Ronde Ad Misleading

The Mannix campaign is demanding the ads be immediately removed because of its inaccuracies.

(SALEM) - In a television ad that started airing on Friday by the Saxton Campaign/Grand Ronde tribes, gubernatorial candidate Kevin Mannix's position on the Columbia River Gorge Casino is being distorted the Mannix Campaign said.

The ad states that Kevin Mannix will help expedite the casino. The quote in the ad is taken out of context. The actual quote states "I will help (the tribes) expedite siting in Cascade Locks"

"The issue there was possible siting of a casino at Cascade Locks as opposed to Hood River.

Restoration of Former Independence Mill Pond to Aid Winter Salmon, Steelhead

The removal of a dam and stream restoration will open miles of new habitat

(INDEPENDENCE) - The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board has agreed to fund a portion of a project that includes removing an old mill pond in Independence.

The $20,625 grant will fund part of a two-year project coordinated by the Luckiamute Watershed Council in cooperation with numerous local and state agencies.

Removal of the pond's dam will open access for juvenile steelhead and Chinook salmon to several miles of the South Fork Ash Creek for the first time in 50 years.
