Fraud Tip of the Week: Telephone Scams

(salem oregon police tip) - Last week, a 62-year-old Salem resident received an unexpected and exciting phone call. The caller asked for her by name and told her she had won $10,000.

Sounds like great news! The caller claimed to be from a finance company of some sort. He gave a "1-800" business number. To claim her money, all she had to do is provide her bank information, including her account number. The caller talked quickly and immediately started firing questions about her banking information.

The potential victim did the right thing. She hesitated, thought about the questions and refused to answer any of the personal questions.

Springtime Brings Beach Safety Reminder

(LINCOLN CITY) - Two annual springtime events that begin this weekend along the Oregon Coast bring with them a beach safety warning from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

Both the SOLV Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup and the opening day of spring whale watch, begin Saturday.

OPRD officials say everyone heading to the coast for spring break needs to remember that the ocean is still at winter strength, and even in sunny weather the combination of powerful seas, eager visitors and drift logs left behind by winter storms can have deadly results.

Group Files Lawsuit Against State Over Inadequate School Funding

Many say the lawsuit will fail to be productive in the end, either way it is a bold move by school funding advocates who feel they have exhausted conventional approaches.

(SALEM) - Several parties have filed a lawsuit against the state of Oregon demanding that it allocate nearly two billion dollars more per biennium to the public school system.

Senate President Courtney: Use Special Session to Help Schools

(SALEM) - In response to a lawsuit filed today charging the legislature with inadequately funding K-12 schools, Senate President Peter Courtney reiterated his support for sending surplus lottery earnings to K-12 schools statewide during a special session this year.

`Right now, we`re trying to come up with about $140 million for seniors, people with disabilities and foster care children and $42 million for school districts. After we do that, I`ll talk to you about the lawsuit..."

Senator Ferrioli Responds to Lawsuit: Believes Politics has No Place in Classrooms

(SALEM) - In response to a lawsuit filed today by the Oregon School Funding Defense Foundation, Senator Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day) raised concerns about the political tactics of the plaintiffs saying politics has no place in the classroom.

`It`s too bad the complainants decided to invite the courts into the school funding debates.` Ferrioli said.

Police Searching For Robbery, Car-Jacking Suspects

(SALEM) - Since Monday, police say three Robberies have been reported in the parking lot of "Food 4 Less", 3695 Devonshire NE in Salem.

A fourth incident involving robbery, kidnapping and a stolen car occurred in the parking lot at 2879 Lancaster Drive NE, minutes after a robbery in the "Food 4 Less" parking lot.

Salem Police Lt. Jim Anglemier says the suspect has approached the victims, some women with children, and demanded money.

Police say that fortunately, none of the victims have been injured.

Gasoline Prices Continue Upward Surge

(SALEM) - Gasoline prices are still rising, and the national average now stands at more than $2.50 for a gallon of regular. That's an increase of more than 14-cents in the past week.

Salem`s average price rings in at $2.34 a gallon. That`s almost a quarter higher than the price last year at this time, when a gallon of regular was selling for $2.11.

Of the four measured metropolitan areas, Medford-Ashland saw the biggest increase—almost 15 cents per gallon—and the average price there now exceeds $2.63.

Deadline Nears For Senior and Disabled Property Tax Deferral Programs

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Revenue reminds Oregonians that April 17th is the filing deadline for the Senior and Disabled Citizen Property Tax Deferral programs.

State Gets Tough on SPAM

The state's new SPAM filtering system saves Oregon taxpayers over two million dollars a year.

(SALEM) - If you think SPAM e-mail is bad on your home computer, try multiplying it by nearly 38,000. That`s the number of e-mail addresses for State of Oregon employees.

While you can`t totally get rid of SPAM, the Department of Administrative Services is taking a proactive approach to minimize the problem.

The Network Operations Center, which runs the state`s central e-mail hub, has set up a SPAM filtering system that does an effective job for state agencies.
