Women`s Military History Week Proclaimed by Governor

(SALEM) - Governor Theodore Kulongoski has signed a proclamation designating the week of March 20th-24th, as Women`s Military History Week in Oregon.

The week is dedicated to recalling, celebrating and saluting the many contributions of American women serving their country in uniform. For well over two centuries, in times of peace and war, generations of women have answered the call of duty, service and country.

Since the beginning of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, between 28,000 and 37,000 female American service members have been deployed annually to serve in harm`s way.

Judge Upholds Governor`s Authority to Veto Single Items in Appropriations Bills

The Governor used his line-item veto power last summer to remove a special-interest rider from an appropriations bill

(SALEM) - Marion County Circuit Court Judge Mary James on Thursday upheld the Governor`s authority to veto single items in appropriations bills.

Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli said Judge James is well known for throwing out Ballot Measure 37 because she believed that it violated the Constitution on six key grounds.

In that instance her decision was unanimously reversed by the Supreme Court on all grounds.

OSU and WOU Receive $2.6 Million in FEMA Earthquake Safety Grants

(Corvallis, Oregon) - A $2.6 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, will make two public campuses - Oregon State University and Western Oregon University - safer for students and community members.

Salem Mayoral Candidates to Debate

(SALEM) - The two candidates vying to become Salem`s next mayor, will square-off during a debate Friday in Salem.

Current Mayor Janet Taylor and her challenger, Jim Alderson, will debate the city`s future during the Salem City Club`s Luncheon at the Red Lion Inn from noon to 1:00 PM.

Alderson is a licensed clinical social worker from West Salem.

UPDATE: Two Arrested in Albany Officer Involved Shooting

(ALBANY) - Police have arrested two men in connection with an officer involved shooting the occurred on Wednesday in which an officer fired his duty weapon at a reportedly stolen vehicle as it accelerated towards him.

Albany police spokesman Capt. Eric Carter says 42-year old Joe Luis Duran, identified as the driver of the reported stolen 1979 Chevy pickup, was taken into custody at a residence in the 1900 block of SE 6th Avenue.

Kidnapping and Car Theft Suspect Apprehended

Police say the man was armed with a .38 caliber handgun.

(ALBANY) - An officer involved shooting that occurred Wednesday in Albany is under investigation by the Oregon State Police, and the Linn County District Attorney`s Office.

Albany Police Captain Eric Carter says just after 10:00 AM, an officer stopped a 1999 Chevy pickup with two occupants in the 2600 block of SE 18th Avenue.

In the process of conducting his stop of the pickup, which had pulled into a driveway, the officer learned that it was a stolen vehicle. The driver attempted to flee the scene and the officer fired his duty weapon at the pickup as it accelerated directly at the officer...

Western Oregon Teachers Union Sets Strike Date

(MONMOUTH) - The Western Oregon University Federation of Teachers has unanimously voted to set a teachers strike date of April 5th.

The decision followed a lengthy and very serious discussion of the possible ramifications of such a dramatic and unprecedented action.

At Monday's mediation session, the union offered a significant compromise on salary but WOU management refused to move off of their final offer.

Driver in Fatal Crash Turns Himself In

Authorities had been searching for Johnathon Bogosian since the crash occurred last week.

(CARLTON) - The alleged driver in a fatal crash March 17th in Yamhill County turned himself in to authorities on Wednesday.

Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree said that, 18-year-old Johnathon David Bogosian, of McMinnville surrendered without incident to Yamhill County Sheriff`s Deputies in Carlton after a series of telephone negotiations with Hillsboro Attorney, David M. Audet.
