OWEB Funds 22 Projects Supporting Coastal Coho

(Newport) - Oregon's commitment to recovery of coastal coho salmon was boosted Thursday through votes of the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board to fund 22 projects in coastal rivers and streams in the amount of $2 million.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries announced in mid-January that Oregon coast coho populations from Seaside to Cape Blanco do not warrant listing under the federal Endangered Species Act.

(SALEM) - Former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, author of "The Politics of Truth: Inside the Lies that Led to War and Betrayed My Wife`s CIA Identity" and "What I Didn't Find in Africa," a book that accuses the Bush administration of manipulating intelligence about Saddam Hussein's weapons programs to justify an invasion of Iraq, will speak at Willamette University, Wednesday, April 5th, at 7:00 PM in Smith Auditorium.

Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival Bloom Begins Monday

The event runs through April 20th

(WOODBURN) - Oregon's largest tulip farm, Wooden Shoe in Woodburn, is anticipating a colorful spring festival.

The 21st annual Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival kicks-off Monday.

There are more than 50 acres of tulips and daffodils to bloom.

The question everyone asks at this time of year is "When will the tulips bloom?"

Tillamook Forest Center Opens April 1st

The center is the outgrowth of a public-private partnership 10 years in the making

(TILLAMOOK) - The Tillamook Forest Center, Oregon`s newest visitor and interpretive facility, located on the Wilson River Highway in the heart of the former "Tillamook Burn," will open to the public on the first day of Oregon Arbor Week, Saturday, April 1st.

The center`s 40-foot tall replica of a fire lookout tower has already become a local landmark, as has a dramatic 250-foot-long pedestrian suspension bridge, which leads from the building across the Wilson River to the nearby Jones Creek Campground.

Global Protests Mark Iraq War Anniversary

The Iraq War's three-year anniversary leads to many demonstrations around the world.

(SYDNEY, Australia AP) - Anti-war protesters marched in Australia, Asia, Turkey and Europe on Saturday in demonstrations that marked the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq with a demand that coalition troops pull out.

Around 500 protesters marched through central Sydney, chanting "End the war now" and "Troops out of Iraq." Many campaigners waved placards branding President Bush the "World's No. 1 Terrorist" or expressing concerns that Iran could be the next country to face invasion.

Murals Cross Generations at Reed Opera House

The relationship between art, history and the people of the Mid-Willamette Valley is old and established, yet vibrant and alive. At the center of downtown Salem history is the Reed Opera House, and sonewhere around the Reed each day is an artist named Kev Kohler, armed with a paint brush and inspiration.

(SALEM) - The spirit of art is alive and well in Oregon`s capitol city, according to Dallas, Oregon artist Kev Kohler. He`s been staying busy in recent months by completing a number of murals at the Reed Opera House in downtown Salem. The historic Reed dates back to 1870, and Kohler`s work when complete will represent many generations of people who have passed through the building`s halls.

Homicide Suspect Caught in Spokane

The 17-year old youth is alleged to have escaped from police custody. He has been recaptured and is in custody in Washington.

(SALEM) - 17-year old Donald Lynn Smiley-Lyle, a homicide suspect wanted out of Spokane, Washington, has been apprehended by police in the Spokane area.

He had last been seen in the Salem area about 5:30 AM Saturday morning.

Airplane Museum Enthralls Thousands Saturday

(MCMINNVILLE) - Special activities at Evergreen Aviation Museum celebrate Annual Family Day with a long list of events that took place Saturday, March 18th, and will continue during Spring Break.

Best known as the home of the world`s largest wooden airplane, the Spruce Goose, there are more than 75 historic aircraft and exhibits on display at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, including the SR-71 Blackbird and Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat. The experience of seeing these spectacular pieces of history is a worthy use of time, whether or not one is an aviation buff. It`s something everyone in the family, young and old alike, will appreciate and remember.

SEIU Union Members Endorse Hill For Governor

Former state treasurer Jim Hill has won a major union endorsement in his bid for governor.

(PORTLAND AP) - The Service Employees International Union Local 503, which represents more than 18,000 state employees, announced their endorsement after months of interviews with the candidates and an analysis of their positions, union officials said.

"SEIU members know that Jim Hill has the experience, the skill and the vision to move Oregon forward," said Joe DiNicola, president of SEIU Local 503.

Legislators Say Prospects Improve For a Successful Session

New Reports from DHS and PPS Clarify Need, Highlight Opportunity

(SALEM) - Two new reports make clear that the Oregon Legislature is now in a position to help close emergency funding gaps at both the Department of Human Services and Portland Public Schools without raising taxes or making painful cuts to other public services.

The first report, delivered Friday afternoon to the legislative Emergency Board, reveals that the DHS budget shortfall is smaller than originally estimated.
