Salem Receives Money to Develop Two New City Parks, Make Improvements to Northgate Park

(Salem) - The City of Salem Parks Department has received some great news this week.

The City of Salem has received a $155,000 Community Development Block Grant for the improvement of Northgate Park located at 3260 Northgate Street N. The City of Salem's Urban Development Department administers the CDBG program through funding from the federal Housing and Urban Development Department.

Debris From High Water Strands Wheatland Ferry

(Keizer AP) - Record winter rains have caused a debris pile-up in the Willamette River that has stranded the Wheatland Ferry, Yamhill County's shortcut to Marion County.

The little ferry normally carries about 600 vehicles a day but record rains in December and Januuary washed enough gravel and debris downstream to ground it.

Salem Firefighters Raise Money to Fight Cancer

(Salem) - Six Salem fire fighters will be participating in the 15th annual Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge, in Seattle, WA on Sunday, March 5th. The fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, expects to beat last year's record participation of 907 fire fighters from 180 fire departments.

New Committee to Advise County on Control of Noxious Weeds

(Salem) - Marion County has re-established a Weed Control District to reduce the spread of noxious weeds which can be harmful to agriculture, livestock and the environment.

Those interested in assisting with development of the education, outreach and enforcement programs of the district are invited to apply for two at-large positions and one urban position on the associated advisory committee which is being formed.

Salem Police Capture Bank Robber

(Salem) - Police apprehended a suspected bank robber Thursday after some good teamwork with the city`s code enforcement division.

It began shortly after 1:00 PM when bank employees at the Oregon Community Credit Union at 890 Lancaster Dr NE, reported a robbery.

They said a male subject had displayed a small handgun and demanded money. The man then fled the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of money...

AG announces Five Million Dollar Settlement With Enzyte Manufacture

(Salem) - Attorney General Hardy Myers has announced a $5 million settlement agreement with an Ohio-based herbal products company resolving a 2005 multi-state lawsuit alleging the company mislead Oregonians about the effectiveness of its supplements and conducted an illegal marketing tactic known as a "negative option," causing consumers to be automatically billed for more shipments of product after trying a so-called "free" offer.

Op-Ed: Some People Shouldn`t be Parents

(Salem) - Some people have serious reasons to rethink their behavior. Children are fragile and striking them in the head is abusive. Sadly, I was witness to a case of this Tuesday night as I drove to a meeting in downtown Salem.

It happened in a cooking supply store on Chemeketa between Commercial and Liberty, just after 5:30 PM.

As I drove by, I saw three small boys ranging in age between four and seven years, sitting on a bench in the store by a window facing the street. The traffic stopped in front of me, and I watched a man who I assume was the boy`s father storm up and strike them in the head. I think he hit all three of them in the head in one movement. He hit them hard.

Oregon Youth Challenge Receives Top Honor Wednesday

(Washington D.C.) - The Oregon National Guard Youth Challenge Program (OYCP) received honors Wednesday for having the best post-residential mentorship program of more than thirty
similar programs nationwide. In addition, it was recently named one of the top three programs of its kind in the nation for 2005 – an honor it has received for four out of the past five years.
