Prisoner Swap is an Opportunity to Again Debate the Closing of Guantanamo

It is time to give Guantanamo back to Cuba.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Guantánamo closure It is unfortunate that the debate about the prisoner swap -- U.S. Army Sgt. Bergdahl for 5 Taliban officials -- disregards or at least minimizes the fact that prior to the swap, there were 149 still imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay Detention Camp, of which 78 are still imprisoned after being cleared for release and 38 the U.S. has said it lacks evidence to prosecute but claims they are too dangerous to release.

Guantánamo has a reputation as a place of torture and indefinite detention, and is a continued international embarrassment.

Religious Conversion Law Threatens Religious Freedom in Burma/Myanmar

The new law is based on proposals by a Buddhist organization called the Association for the Protection of Race and Religion.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Shwe Mann Over 81 organizations from civil society worldwide today call on the Government of Burma/Myanmar to scrap proposed legislation that would unlawfully restrict the right to freely choose a religion. If adopted, this law would violate fundamental human rights and could lead to further violence against Muslims and other religious minorities in the country.

The draft “Religious Conversion Law”, published in state-run media on 27 May 2014, sets out a process for applying for official permission to convert from one religion to another.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Bowe Bergdahl I don’t care if you don’t like my title. Bowe Bergdahl was in the wrong place, wrong time, and in the wrong Army. He should have been in the Navy or Air Force, where his natural abilities could have been used and appreciated. It seems that he was somewhat of an intellectual. The infantry is the wrong place for such a person.

Armed Stand-Off at Salem Apartment Complex

Drivers are asked to stay out of the area until further notice.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem-News.com is live on scene of an armed stand-off in Salem at the Lancaster Commons Apartment Complex.

A Salem Police Sergeant tells Salem-News.com that there is one male suspect held up in one of the units and they believed he is armed.

This incident is in the 2400 block of Coral Ave, just off of Lancaster Drive. The Salem Police SWAT team has been called in.

Salem Man Holds Wife at Gunpoint Overnight; Meth Use Could Be to Blame

Deputies arrested the suspect while in possession of meth, paraphernalia, and .22 caliber handgun.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Alvaro Esquivel-Quiroz Marion County Sheriff's Deputies have arrested a Salem man who allegedly held his wife of nine years at gunpoint through the night.

Sergeant Chris Baldridge says on Tuesday, deputies went to a home located on 47th Ave SE in Salem. During the investigation, the wife said after the suspect came home from work, accused the victim of conspiring with neighbors and installing listening devices in the walls of the home

Human activity is one of the leading cause of wild land fires throughout the summer, both accidental and intentional in nature.

(BEND, Ore. ) - The 56-acre Euchre Creek fire was reported on Wednesday afternoon and is located approximately 12 miles north of Gold Beach on lands protected by the Coos Forest Protective Association.

The Two Bulls Fire that broke out midday Saturday near Tumalo, 10 miles northwest of Bend is now in mop-up and de-mob will start Thursday afternoon. Size is estimated at 6,908 acres.

Oregon State Police Searching for Missing Utah Man

UPDATE: Larry W. Hutcherson has been found safe with family in Washington State.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Oregon State Police and West Jordan, Utah Police Department are asking the public's help to locate missing 35-year old male believed endangered who may be traveling in Oregon, possibly westbound on Interstate 84.

35-year-old Larry W. Hutcherson, from West Jordan, Utah was reported missing on Wednesday, by his mother to West Jordan Police Department. Mental health concerns lead his mother and police to believe he is a danger to himself and others.
