Man Escapes From Oregon Run Group Home; Assaults Newberg Family

While the assaults were taking place, the 10-year-old brother was able to call 911.

(NEWBERG, Ore. ) - On Thursday afternoon, a 37-year-old man escaped from a state run community group home in Newberg, after assaulting one of the female staff members.

Police were called to the home at 3:30 p.m., and found that Richard Lee Wright, after escaping the group home, had run into a private residence next door, and assaulted a 7-year-old boy who lives in the home.

Scientists Say Butterflies May Hold The Key to Evolution Theory

The evolution of life has never been simple, as Aristotle and the other early philosophers found out. But one bone or butterfly eyespot at a time, the pieces continue to come together.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - A new study of the colorful “eyespots” on the wings of some butterfly species is helping to address fundamental questions about evolution that are conceptually similar to the quandary Aristotle wrestled with about 330 B.C. - “which came first, the chicken or the egg?”

After consideration, Aristotle decided that both the egg and the chicken had always existed, which was not the right answer. The new Oregon State University research is providing a little more detail.

Albany Man Arrested on 14 Sex Crime Charges

Police say the victims were allegedly abused over the course of two years.

(ALBANY, Ore. ) - An Albany man faces 14 sex crime charges after he allegedly raped and abused two young kids.

35-year-old Steven Truchon is being held in the Linn County Jail on two counts of first-degree rape, four counts of first-degree sex abuse, four counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and two counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.

Silver Falls to Open First Natural Play Area for Children on Saturday

What is a natural play area? It's a safe place for unstructured play, created to spark the imagination and encourage physical activity.

(SILVERTON, Ore. ) - Silver Falls State Park is set to play host to a grand opening celebration on Saturday, launching the first "natural play" area for children ever constructed in an Oregon state park. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the North Falls Group Camp area, and is open to the public.

"Connecting kids to the outdoors is a critically important thing to do, for a whole host of reasons," said Oregon Parks and Recreation Director Director Lisa VanLaanen.

Dallas Drug Raid Leads to One Man`s Arrest

Polk County Sheriff's Office Sergeant and POINT supervisor Mark Garton said, "Evidence also suggests that the sales of methamphetamine and heroin from this residence have been ongoing for some time".

(SALEM, Ore. ) - On Thursday, at about 3 p.m., the Polk County Inter Agency Narcotics Team served a search warrant at 1141 SW Fairview Ave in Dallas stemming from tips the team received starting at the beginning of May of this year.

The POINT team arrested 27-year-old Calvin Craver. During the search warrant service detectives located 19.8 grams of heroin and 23.6 grams of methamphetamine.

Teen Arrested for Threating to Blow Up School

The suspect's residence was searched and no bombs or bomb making materials were located.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Marion County Sheriff's Office was called to the Oasis Brooks Program a local school in the 10000 block of 71st Avenue NE on Wednesday. Staff reported to deputies that a 14-year-old student threatened to blow up the school after becoming upset with teachers.

According to the investigator, Deputy Colby Korte, "In today's climate we have to take any threat against a school seriously."

Salem to Recieve Funding to Redevelop Brownfield Sites

Salem to get $200,000 in community-wide hazardous substances grant funds that will be used to conduct up to eight Phase I and four Phase II environmental site assessments.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley announced Thursday that five Oregon communities will receive $1.55 million in new funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to redevelop brownfield sites.

The grants should create good-paying, green jobs while allowing each city and county to accelerate the redevelopment of the brownfield sites.
