(SALEM) - At approximately 1:00 p.m. Sunday, the Marion County Sheriff's Office was notified that River Road South, near the Independence Bridge, has been closed due to high water.

According to Traffic Safety Team Sergeant Craig Cunningham, "Drivers often drive around the barriers and road closure signs and get stranded due to high water and then need to be rescued.

In addition, there are safety concerns that the water may erode the bed of the roadway and the weight of a vehicle could cause the road to collapse into a sink hole."

Drivers caught driving around barricades may be issued a citation that carries a fine of up to $110.00.
