Salem-News.com Sports (May 21, 2006 22:02)No. 7 Ranked Oregon State Softball Team Wins NCAA Regional Tournament Title With 3-1 Victory Ove Salem-News.com SPORTS(CORVALLIS) - Junior pitcher Brianne McGowan tossed a four-hitter and sophomore Cambria Miranda belted a home run to lead the No. 7 ranked Oregon State softball team to a 3-1 victory over No. 19 ranked Baylor University on Sunday in the NCAA Regional Tournament championship game.
Oregon State (41-13) advances to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time - this is just the second year in which the Super Regional format has been used - but this marks the third time in the past four years that the Beavers have reached the final 16.
Both teams were slow to get things going offensively, but Miranda turned the tide for the Beavers when she matched the Oregon State single season record (Tarrah Beyster - 2000) with her 16th home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to break up Lisa Ferguson`s no-hitter. Salem-News.com Sports (May 21, 2006 21:26)No. 10 Beavers Clinch at Least a Share of Pacific-10 Baseball Title Salem-News.com SPORTS(PULLMAN, Wash.) - Oregon State clinched at least a share of the Pacific-10 baseball championship as the No. 10-ranked Beavers beat Washington State 13-3 Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. Cole Gillespie homered, doubled, drove in four runs and tied the school record for runs scored in a season for OSU (38-13 overall, 15-6 Pac-10).
As the game ended, the Beavers were awating the outcome of the games that had Arizona State at Arizona and Stanford at UCLA; if both Arizona and Stanford were to win, OSU would be assured of sole possession of the Pac-10 title for the second straight season.W
Even if Arizona State or UCLA were to win one of those games, Oregon State has the chance to wrap up the championship for itself by winning one of three home games next weekend against UCLA. The Beavers and Bruins will meet Friday at 5:00 PM, Saturday at 1:00 PM and Sunday at 1:00 PM at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
On Sunday, there was a little extra spring in the Beavers` steps as they left the dugout to congratulate their teammates... Read Full Article

Salem-News.com Sports (May 20, 2006 00:06)Kahne Wins All-Star Pole By JENNA FRYER, AP Motorsports Writer(CONCORD, N.C.) - Kasey Kahne's pit crew lost its title as the best in NASCAR, but bounced back Friday night by putting the driver on the pole for the Nextel All-Star Challenge.
Kahne's crew serviced his Dodge in 13 seconds to help put him in the top starting spot for Saturday night's race.
His crew was dethroned earlier this week in the Pit Crew Challenge, finishing second in the competition that spotlights NASCAR's unsung heroes.
"They stepped it up tonight, and they showed they didn't care about finishing second," Kahne said.
The qualifying format for the All-Star event is unlike any other race, in which the fastest lap wins the pole. In this race, the field is set by the combined speed of three laps and a pit stop.
Jimmie Johnson, winner of the 2003 All-Star race, qualified second and actually had the fastest pit stop of the day at 12.2 seconds. Read Full Article
