Pulitzer Prize-Winner David Cay Johnston to Discuss Income Inequality at Salem Library Event

The talk is being organized by the Oregon Center for Public Policy and is being co-sponsored by the Salem Progressive Film Series.

(SALEM) - One of the nation's foremost experts on income inequality, David Cay Johnston, is coming to Salem in May to discuss what many are calling the defining challenge of our times.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and noted author will speak on Saturday, May 3 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Salem Public Library. Johnston's talk, "Middle, Rich, Poor-- Why Inequality Matters," is free and open to the public.

Honeybees Create a Buzz at Oregon Body-Art Center

A swarm of bees in the city is not a typical day in the neighborhood

(SALEM) - State Street and 17th in Salem is always a busy intersection, but today it was the honeybees that had the right of way.

A swarm of honeybees made its way to the tree just next to the building where the Oregon Body-Art Center is located. It is spring, and in the spring, honeybees do what they want.

Two Vehicle Crash Results In Serious Injury

(SALEM) - A man who witnesses say forced one vehicle off the roadway after he crossed the center line struck another vehicle sending both men to the hospital.

Pavel Bobko, age 32, of Salem was driving his silver Dodge Caravan on Cordon Road NE between Sunnyview Road NE and Carolina Road NE this afternoon ar ound 2:00 p.m.

Salem Saturday Market Showered with Fun

Spring is in the air, and it was in full bloom in downtown Salem this weekend.

(SALEM) - The opening day of Salem Saturday Market 2014 was a great success with 85 vendors welcoming old friends and new to the area’s biggest outdoor market. The skies were heavy laden with clouds, and rain was in the forecast, but the sun broke through and very few drops fell. Salemites were ready for the market, and turned out by the hundred, rain or shine, umbrellas in tow.

“There are a lot of new vendors this year, and almost twice as many on opening day as we had last year,” said Kerry Jackson, the assistant Marketing Director for Salem Saturday Market. “Everyone is very enthusiastic and looking forward to a terrific season.”

Woman Struck While Crossing Lancaster Drive in Salem

(SALEM) - A woman was struck by a car Thursday night around 9:00 p.m. on Lancaster Drive NE at D Street, as she crossed from west to east. Two witnesses at the scene spoke to Salem-News about what they saw.

Emalee Brown, a customer in the Dutch Brothers drive-through said, "I was sitting at Dutch Brothers and there was a lady walking in the crosswalk, and she hadn't really made it to the middle lane yet. The car was coming from McDonald's when the light was red."

School Placed in Lockdown During Police Search for Man Who Bolted from Traffic Stop

Police used canine units to track the man through South Salem, he was eventually located and taken into custody on Suntree Court. This is an area near the now closed Fairview Training Center.

(SALEM) - A middle school was placed on lock down as police in Salem spent hours tracking a suspect who bolted from his car during a traffic stop. It happened in south Salem today around 12:30 p.m. The incident began near Pringle Road.

Leslie Middle School was locked down from 12:45 to 2:40 p.m. No students were impacted.

Willamette University Awarded Grant to Enhance Sustainability, Asian programs

(SALEM) - With the help of a $400,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, Willamette University is implementing a new program to develop intercultural understanding and communication through the study of Asia and environmental sustainability.

The grant is funding curriculum and faculty development, place-based learning in Japan, symposia and workshops on Asia and environmental sustainability, and the Zena Sustainability Institute...

Deputy Hit By Car While on Traffic Stop

Justin Kinyon, with the Marion County Sheriff's Office, was fortunate to escape serious injury.

(SALEM) - "I was sitting in my car filling out a citation and suddenly I was thrown forward." These are the words of Deputy Justin Kinyon who was struck by another vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on Lancaster Dive NE near Glendale Avenue NE at about 1:00 p.m., yesterday.

Deputy Kinyon was pulled to the right in his fully marked patrol car with his emergency lights activated. According to witnesses, Mohammed Ali, age 53, of Salem was driving his Ford, Windstar van in the right hand lane as he approached Deputy Kinyon's traffic stop.

Man Dies in Apparent Accidental Drowning (VIDEO)

The victim's name and age have not been released by authorities.

(SALEM) - An adult male died in an apparent accidental drowning Sunday in Salem, the man's body was recovered and transported from the scene on Electric Street SE.

Authorities were called to the scene around 5:00 p.m. No details were available at this time regarding how the reported drowning took place.
