(SALEM) - Images from the top monthly articles published by <i>Salem-News.com</i> in 2012. 2012 was an interesting year for Salem-News.com. Honors were bestowed upon Tim and Bonnie King as a result of Tim's long list of reports exposing war crimes against Tamil people in Sri Lanka.

On a sad note, Salem-News.com said good bye to one of its longest standing writers, however the work of Salem-News.com Human Rights Ambassador William Nicholas Gomes, has been acclaimed in Asian press time and time again.

Help the Homeless Aids Salem Residents Facing a Tough Winter

In its third year, event sees highest attendance yet.

(SALEM) - John Olivera of Steeles Karate The Help the Homeless event in Salem this weekend was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of John and Marci Olivera of Steeles Karate. In its third year, the event fed and provided helpful items to a large number of attendees who enjoyed good cheer and even live music.

After covering the event, some people who had made the trip to attend Help the Homeless from West Salem, asked if it was possible to get a ride back to the homeless camp they reside in.

More than 100 Attend The Compassionate Friends 16th Worldwide Candle Lighting

Loved ones gather to honor those who passed.

(SALEM) - Candlelight ceremony in Salem for lost children Communities across the globe joined in The Compassionate Friends 16th Worldwide Candle Lighting on December 9, 2012.

The organization's Salem Chapter held their candle lighting event on the Oregon state capitol steps. The names of children who have passed were read aloud to a gathered crowd of more than 100 people.

Family Barely Escapes Home During Raging Fire

Estimated damages are $170,000.

(SALEM) - Photo from Jefferson Fire, video by Jerry Freeman On December 8, at 2:12 a.m. Jefferson Fire District was dispatched to a house fire on 1891 Steiwer Rd SE Jefferson, Oregon 97352.

Marion, Stayton, Turner Fire District and Engine 9 from Salem were also dispatched to assist with the call. At 4:24 a.m. the fire was deemed under control.

Two employees lives spanned more than 80 years of service.

(SALEM) - Janice Brooten with Chief Moore Salem Police celebrated the retirements Police Records Technicians Jean Duda and Janice Brooten, whose careers spanned a total of over 80 years.

The celebration was held at the Salem Library Anderson Conference Room and was hosted by Salem Police Chief Jerry Moore.
