House Passes Mining Company Land Swap Bill Favoring Foreign-Based Rio Tinto

The measure passed by a vote of 235-186, with only seven Democrats joining 228 Republicans in voting for passage and only 8 Republicans joining 178 Democrats in voting against the measure.

(BERKELEY, Calif. ) - U.S. House of Representatives The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill (HR 1904) that would swap federal land in Arizona with Resolution Copper Mining, a company owned jointly by Rio Tinto (55%) and BHP Billiton (45%). Resoluton Copper is hoping to gain greater access to its mining claim, which is considered the largest undeveloped copper deposit in North America and the third largest in the world.

The measure is supported by building, mining, pro-business, and conservative ideological groups.

IHH Emergency Teams continue relief efforts in quake-stricken Van

Immediately after the quake, IHH aid teams rushed to the region to join search and rescue efforts.

(ISTANBUL) - Emergency teams of IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation continue relief efforts in Van’s Erciş district which was hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake on Sunday.

The aid teams which rushed to the area immediately after the quake took part in search and rescue efforts throughout the night. IHH Emergency Aid Coordinator Recep Güzel who is in the disaster region said there are still dozens of people under demolished buildings while noting that there is a problem of water shortage in the area.
