We are a troubled nation. That trouble stems from a sense of helplessness. All the eloquent eulogies in the world can only soothe us but should never lull us into false complacency.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Soldier saluting In some ways it was the modern-day series of shots heard round the world. That mental health screener had his own inner spirits of discontent as a would-be martyr who should have been smarter.

At this time we lack concrete information on his trigger within. At best, we can speculate from the sidelines.

(PASO ROBLES, Calif.) - Republicans condemn Democrats for spending too much money on Healthcare Reform, yet encourage President Obama to send more troops to Afghanistan as an increasing expense to the nation.

A chorus based on the same tune was used to achieve similar results [domestically and abroad] where 130,000 troops supposedly will be removed from Iraq by the end of 2011, and where the act of military reduction ought to be well under way, but isn’t.

Marines: We Celebrate November 10

A memory from the Vietnam War on the 234th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps.

(GUILFORD, Indiana) - Marines enroute to Vietnam The picture accompanying this story was taken in Vietnam aboard the USS Iwo Jima in late 1967. I'm on the left, holding one of the few M-14 rifles that remained in the 1st Battalion 3rd Marine Regiment (1/3) before everyone went to the M-16 rifle.

I also had a West German AGFA camera that was almost impossible to find film for in Vietnam, so this was one of those rare shots that made it home.
