Conflict in Pakistan Displaces Tens of Thousands

UN agencies concerned over 'massive displacement' in Pakistan

(NORTH WEST FRONTIER PROVINCE, Pakist) - Displaced women in Pakistan The United Nations agencies tasked with protecting refugee and children's rights today expressed deep concern over the “massive displacement” in north-west Pakistan caused by the widening armed conflict between Government forces and militants.

The provincial government estimates between 150,000 to 200,000 people have already arrived in safer areas of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) over the last few days, with another 300,000 already on the march or about to leave, according to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Two Die in Crash East of Newport

Two more people were injured in the double fatal crash on Highway 20.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Fatal crash A Seal Rock Couple died in a two-vehicle head-on crash Friday afternoon on Highway 20 about twenty miles east of Newport.

Oregon State Police troopers say that around 5:20 p.m. Friday, a 1986 Cadillac De Ville operated by 86-year old Jack Whipple, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 20 when, according to witnesses, it began to pass another vehicle.

Police Investigate Serious Injury Traffic Crash on Highway 126E East of Blue River

Highway 126E was closed for about 15 minutes for LifeFlight landing purposes.

(BLUE RIVER, Ore.) - Crash near Blue River, Oregon 5-8-09 Four members of a Springfield family were injured, two seriously, Friday afternoon in a single vehicle crash on Highway 126 about ten miles east of Blue River.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Recruit Trooper Cale Day, on May 8, 2009 at approximately 1:45 p.m. a van driven by 30-year old Marion Pielaet, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 50 when it drove off the right shoulder at the intersection with Taylor Road where it collided into a telephone pole.

The quick actions of Salem firefighters prevented the home from becoming a total loss.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fire in Salem, Oregon 5-09-09 A Salem family's weekend getaway to the Oregon coast was cut short Friday night, when they received a phone call advising them that their home on Jones Road was on fire.

The family that lives in the residence at 5167 Jones Road SE, turned around and arrived to see their garage severely damaged, but the home, thanks to the quick actions of firefighters, was still still primarily intact.

Jesusita Fire Near Santa Barbara Only 10% Contained (VIDEO)

Experts say dry conditions will elevate California's fire risk for 20 Years.

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) - Jesusita Fire near Santa Barbara AccuWeather's Expert Meteorologist Joe Bastardi says Southern California's extremely dry conditions are going to have an ongoing impact in terms of fire safety. In fact, he says residents will continue to see fire-related problems because of this for at least the next 20 years.

The drought hasn't been good news for crews battling the Jesusita Fire north of Santa Barbara, The Pacific Ocean is cooling, and that means the weather pattern is changing and the result will be areas of the Southwest remaining dry.

Police Seek Armed Gunman in Video Store Robbery (VIDEO)

The suspect who is currently at large, is described as a white male in his 40's, five-foot ten to six feet tall, with dark hair, wearing blue jeans and a black leather jacket, and white tennis shoes with a black stripe.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Robbery investigation Salem Police are on the scene of a reported armed robbery in Salem at the Blockbuster Video store at 17th and Market. The incident reportedly happened between 11:45 a.m. and noon Friday.

Fallen Police Honored in Oregon

They were added to the memorial wall joining the names of 167 other fallen Oregon law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty since the 1880s.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Police memorial Approximately 500 fellow officers, family, friends and others joined together Thursday afternoon in Salem at the Oregon Public Safety Academy to honor the brave men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Four names were added to Oregon's Memorial Wall where it is inscribed "WITH THE REDEDICATION OF THE LIVING TO THE PRINCIPLES WHICH GUIDED THESE DEAD, WE GIVE MEANING TO THEIR SACRIFICE."

UPDATE - Oregon Guard Soldier Commits Suicide at Anderson Readiness Center

Troopers say a soldier who committed suicide this morning was not set to deploy to Iraq with the 41st BCT.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Anderson Readiness Center in Salem Oregon State Police detectives say they are continuing the investigation into the suicide of an Oregon National Guard soldier who died Friday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as he sat in his vehicle in the west parking lot at the Anderson Readiness Center in Salem.

According to the Oregon Military Department, the 25-year old man was not slated for deployment nor has he deployed with the ONG. His name is withheld pending completion of next of kin notifications.
