Navy Announces Commissioning of Submarine North Carolina

The 7,800-ton North Carolina was built under a teaming arrangement between Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat.

(WILMINGTON, N.C.) - The Navy's newest attack submarine North Carolina will be commissioned Saturday, May 3rd, during a 10:00 AM EDT ceremony at Port of Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C.

U.S. Military Casualties Reported in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait

The deaths of ten U.S. servicemen are announced by the Department of Defense.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Department of Defense has announced several deaths over the past two days in Iraq, servicemembers were also lost in Afghanistan and in Kuwait in one non-combat related incident.

Among the dead are three soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom died April 28th in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their forward operating base with indirect fire.

Rashid Community Leaders Open District Council Hall

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Leaders from the Rashid district community, local Iraqi Special Forces, and 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th ID, gathered to demonstrate their joint commitment to improve the quality of life for Iraqi citizens during the commemoration of a new building for the Rashid District Council Hall on April 26th.

"This building provides the leaders and citizens of Rashid a meeting place to voice their concerns to their elected officials, to plan, and with wisdom, map out the way of progress for all Iraqis here in Rashid," said Col. Ted Martin, cmdr, 1st BCT.

Driver Receives 95 Month Sentence for Fatal March Crash

The driver of the Honda was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene where he was pronounced deceased.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - A man driving a vehicle in a March 4th 2008 crash that caused the death of a Eugene man, was sentenced to 95 months in prison in Lane County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

41-year old Eduardo Gutierrez of Eugene, was sentenced to 95 months in prison after being convicted of Manslaughter II, Assault III, DUII and Reckless Driving related to a fatal traffic crash on Highway 99 north of Eugene.

Soldiers Killed During the Korean War are Identified

Between 2001 and 2005, joint U.S. and Democratic People's Republic of Korea teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), conducted excavations of several burial sites near the Chosin Reservoir.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are Corporal Robert L. Mason of Parkersburg, West Virginia; and Private first class Joseph K. Meyer Jr., of Wahpeton, North Dakota; both U.S. Army. The remains of the men will be buried Saturday. Robert Mason will be buried in Belpre, Ohio, and Joseph Meyer will be buried in Wahpeton.
