Teens in Oregon Smoking Less, Drinking Alcohol More

In survey results, 32 percent of Oregon's eighth graders and 44 percent of 11th graders drank alcohol within the past month.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Alcohol drinking Cigarette and marijuana smoking are down among Oregon middle and high school students, and alcohol use remains the same for 11th graders but has increased 28 percent for eighth graders, according to the Oregon Department of Human Services Addictions and Mental Health Division.

Armed Robberies in USC Classrooms Under Investigation in Los Angeles

Officials say a number of student education measures have been taken.

(LOS ANGELES) - The USC campus in Los Angeles Public Safety officials at the University of Southern California and the Los Angeles Police are working in partnership to address safety concerns after students reported being robbed at gunpoint while attending class.

Police say there have actually been two recent armed robbery incidents that have occurred on the USC Campus. The first incident occurred on March 14th at around 11:00 PM. The second happened during daylight hours on March 16th at around 1:00 PM.

SEDCOR Speedway 2008

The 2008 Gala was a special evening in support of economic development in the Mid-Willamette Valley.

(SALEM, Ore.) - SEDCOR held their Annual Gala Friday night at the Oregon Pavilion. This year NASCAR racing was the theme and over 650 members were in attendance.

The evening's festivities included business show tables, dinner, entertainment complete with a casino, and the raffle drawing for a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette. Capital Auto Group and Oregon Community Credit Union were the Title Sponsors.

While raising funds to support MedAssist, one of its most important programs, the Foundation will continue in that tradition on Saturday, April 5th at the Elsinore, with Christopher Gardner, author and associate producer of The Pursuit of Happyness. His life was portrayed in the movie by movie mega-star Wil Smith.

(KARBALA, Iraq) - View over the Shrine of Imam Husayn UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today strongly condemned the bomb attack near the Imam Hussein shrine in the holy city of Karbala in central Iraq that has killed several dozen people and left many more injured.

"The Secretary-General extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in this heinous attack," his spokesperson said in a statement.

Today, Salem Hospital serves both Marion and Polk counties, and beyond. With a combined population of more than 378,000 people, much has changed in these two counties.

Stayton City Council Considers More Local TV Programming

The council also discussed mandatory setbacks and received an update on the city water system.

(STAYTON, Ore.) - Ken Cartwright is one of the people trying to revive Stayton`s community access television system. The Stayton city council met last night and councilors present were Scott Vigil, Steve Frank, Don Walters, Tim Grimes and mayor Virginia Honeywell. Absent was Don Koenig.

The first presentation of the evening to the council, made by this reporter, regarded the need for a community access television system. In the presentation it was noted that the designated channel 19 that was set aside for this purpose is under-utilized.

Exhibition Explores Artist`s Reaction to Apartheid

Andries Fouries: Recent Work is supported in part by grants from the City of Salem’s Transient Occupancy Tax and the Oregon Arts Commission.

(SALEM, Ore.) - An exhibition of works by South African painter and sculptor Andries Fourie, the newest member of Willamette University’s art faculty, opens April 12th and will be on display through May 11th at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

Andries Fourie: Recent Work will be held in the Atrium Gallery and will coincide with the senior art majors exhibition in the Melvin-Henderson-Rubio Gallery. Fourie will give a free gallery talk about his work Tuesday, April 15th at 12:30 PM at the museum.
