Rare Helen Keller - Anne Sullivan Photo Discovered

Photograph part of recently donated large family collection.

(BOSTON) - helen keller The New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston today announced the recent discovery of what is being called one of the most significant photographic finds documenting the impressive life of Helen Keller.

The photograph, taken in July 1888 in Brewster, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, shows eight-year-old Helen Keller seated next to her teacher, Anne Sullivan, as they hold hands. Ms. Sullivan taught young Helen sign language by fingerspelling into the palm of her hand. A large doll rests on Keller’s lap.

Grand Canyon Flood Experiment Now Underway

Scientists hope to gain a better understanding about whether higher flows created by releasing water from the dam can be used to rebuild eroded beaches downstream.

(PAGE, Ariz. ) - grand canyon flooding Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne Wednesday morning opened jet tubes at Glen Canyon Dam to release about 41,500 cubic feet per second of Colorado River water into the Grand Canyon. The Secretary’s action launched a scientific experiment aimed at learning more about how to improve the river for wildlife and visitors.

A major portion of the research is focused on the well-being of native fish. The humpback chub, an endangered species, is one of four remaining native fish in the Grand Canyon. USGS scientists will be monitoring how the high-flow releases affect the survival of a population of young humpback chub.

Oregon State Researcher Documents Rare Wolverine in California

Reports of wolverine sightings occur occasionally in California, but none of those sightings have been confirmed.

(TRUCKEE, Calif.) - california wolverine A rare wolverine has been documented in the Tahoe National Forest by a researcher from Oregon State University working with colleagues at the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Research Station – the first confirmed sighting of the animal in nearly three-quarters of a century.

Katie Moriarty, a graduate student in OSU’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, has been conducting research in the forest on the effects of landscape change on American martens using a large array of cameras that remotely capture images of martens and other animals through the use of motion sensors or heat detectors.

Albany Police Seeking Bank Robbery Suspect

(ALBANY, Ore. ) - albany bank robber Police in Albany, Oregon are asking for the public's help in locating a man who robbed a U.S. Bank Tuesday afternoon.

Captain Eric Carter says police were dispatched to the Santiam branch of U.S Bank located at 2650 SE Santiam Highway around 12:36 p.m., on the report of a robbery. The suspect is described as a heavy set white male adult in his fifties, approximately 5'10", with short grey hair, wearing a dark jacket and baseball hat.

Police Find Burned Man on Roadway

The burn victim has been idetified as 26-year-old Augusto Martinez-Escobar of Salem.

(BROOKS, Ore. ) - Marion County Sheriff Marion County Sheriff's detectives are trying to determine if a man found lying in the road was burn intentionally or on accident.

Deputies, with the assistance of Gervais Police, located the burn victim on 50th Ave NE near Waconda Rd. NE in Brooks as they were checking the area for suspects in a reported theft.

NAYA Family Center, CASH Oregon Receive Grants to Promote Earned Income Tax Credit

Tax season is upon us, and help is available for local families and individuals who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - United Way Logo A Bank of America Charitable Foundation grant to the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette is assisting the Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA Family Center) and CASH Oregon in their efforts to educate tax filers about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Both NAYA and CASH Oregon are launching EITC campaigns to conduct outreach to eligible tax filers and offer free tax preparation for individuals and families earning less than $39,783 annually.

Stayton Man Dies in Construction Equipment Accident

Joshua Moughler, who was pronounced deceased at the scene, was working on a project repaving a portion of the highway damaged in the early December storm.

(ALSEA, Ore.) - A Stayton-area man was killed Wednesday morning when the asphalt grinder he was operating at a repaving project on Highway 34 west of Alsea rolled down an embankment.

According to Oregon State Police Sergeant Mark Davie, the victim, 28-year old Joshua James Moughler of Stayton, was operating an asphalt grinder on Highway 34 near milepost 31 when a portion of the pavement collapsed.

Medical Marijuana Bill Clears Senate Committee in Illinois

A multiple sclerosis patient's testimony appears to have reached legislators.

(SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) - For the second year in a row, members of the Illinois Senate Public Health Committee voted in favor of a medical marijuana bill, 6-4, after receiving written and oral testimony from medical professionals, patients, and policy experts today.

SB 2865, sponsored by Sens. John Cullerton and Donn E. Trotter, both of whom serve as majority caucus whips, would protect seriously ill patients who use medical marijuana with a doctor's recommendation from the threat of arrest and jail.
