(Earth: X-treme) - Nota Bene #80 If the article in The New York Times "New York Measuring Teachers by Test Scores" seemed a bit odd to you (why would anyone teach in NYC when the City hangs a "kick me" sign around teachers' necks), it's because your perspective is confined to this world and this world only.

There are other worlds which are populated with teachers who enjoy being underpaid, under-represented, given the mathematically impossible task of making every student "above average," and being humiliated for their efforts.

Study Finds Smoking Marijuana is Bad For Your Gums

People who reported even some cannabis use (fewer than 41 times a year) were more likely to have mild and severe gum disease than people who never used the drug.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Marijuana smoker Young people who are heavy smokers of cannabis may be putting themselves at significant risk for periodontal disease, according to new research.

The study, published in the Feb. 6 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, is believed to be the first to explore whether or not smoking a substance other than tobacco – in this case, marijuana more than other cannabis products – may be a risk factor for gum disease.

Police Find Man Dead Man on Street

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore.) - Death investigation Milwaukie Police responded to a report of a subject lying on the side of the road on SE River Road, just south of SE McLoughlin Boulevard at 7:44 PM.

Arriving officers found a male subject who had suffered from a fatal gunshot wound. The subject, identified at this time as a 32-year old Milwaukie man, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

California Leaning Toward Clinton in Early Counts

California is leaning toward Clinton, and Republican contender John McCain is hoping this day will see Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee slip out of the race.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Clinton and Obama Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were pulling an equal share of states in this "Super Tuesday" primary election. California results as of a few minutes ago show a 2% return with Clinton winning at 57%, up 25 points from Obama. 49% of white voters and 81% black voters are backing Obama. But 73% of Asian voters and 66% of the Latino vote is backing Clinton.

CIA Admits Waterboarding Three Suspects

Human Rights Watch says CIA’s acknowledgment of waterboarding is admission of a crime.

(NEW YORK) - Waterboarding art Human Rights Watch says CIA Director Michael Hayden’s admission that the CIA used waterboarding should prompt an immediate criminal investigation by the Department of Justice. Although use of waterboarding has been widely reported in the press, this is the first time that the CIA has openly acknowledged employing the practice.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Many are calling it the most closely fought Democratic nomination contest of modern times. As the hours pass on the day known as "Super Tuesday" residents in 22 states are deciding who they want to see as the next elected leader of the United States of America.

Hillary Clinton initially had a commanding lead in the polls, but that has ended as voters are increasingly looking toward Barack Obama. Obama's popularity is coming across to Americans in pop culture and on campuses and it seems to be increasing by the day.

Deceased Veterans in Oregon Will be Honored

This ceremony is open to the public, families and friends, veterans organizations and media.

(SALEM, Ore.) - American flag folded at funeral The Oregon National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team to honor veterans who have died at war but not received full military honors. Guard officials say it is in response to requests from families of veterans who recently passed away.

Full military honors will be provided to 35 veterans from Salem and the surrounding area at a mass funeral honors presentation at the Salem Armory Auditorium, 2310 17th St. NE on Wednesday at 3:01 PM. Doors will open at 2:30 PM.

OMSI has Front Row Seats for Nasa Space Shuttle Atlantis Launch

Oregon Astronaut Stanley Love of Eugene is on board.

(PORTLAND, Ore..) - Space Shuttle Atlantis OMSI will offer space exploration enthusiasts a front row seat to watch Stanley Love from Eugene, Oregon and NASA's Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-122 launch into space Thursday, February 7th at 11:00 AM.

The scheduled 11:45 AM PDT launch and flight to the International Space Station will be shown in OMSI's planetarium via satellite on NASA TV. Admission to the televised launch is free with paid museum admission.
