Navy to Christen USNS Robert E. Peary

Officials say the USNS Robert E. Peary will directly contribute to the ability of the Navy to maintain a worldwide forward presence.

(SAN DIEGO) - The Navy will christen the USNS Robert E. Peary at an 11:00 AM PST ceremony on February 9th. The christening ceremony for the newest ship in the Lewis and Clark class of underway replenishment ships.

Designated as T-AKE 5, the new ship honors Navy Rear Adm. Robert Edwin Peary, (1856–1920), an American explorer born in Cresson, Pa., who is credited as the first person to reach the geographic North Pole. Peary was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy October 26th 1881, and achieved the rank of rear admiral.

Oregon National Guard Aids Detroit and Idanha Communities

In December, the Oregon Guard assisted in the response and recovery phases of severe winter storms that struck the northwest part of the state with high wind and rains.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - The Oregon National Guard today will help people in Idanha and Detroit climb out from several feet of snow after a series of heavy snowfalls buried the communities in recent weeks.

Man Guilty on 46 Counts Related to Sex Crimes Against Girlfriend

The suspect had a history of barricading women in bedrooms and abusing them.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Donald Gosney was convicted Friday of 46 counts in a Washington County Court for sexually assaulting his girlfriend while he kept her trapped in their apartment for several days. He will be sentenced on February 13.

It began on August 21st 2007 when Washington County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 4400 block of S.W. 99th Avenue to investigate an assault. This area is outside the city of Beaverton and is part of the Enhanced Sheriff's Patrol District.

ET: It’s true that humans do a lot more damage to shark populations than vice versa. Marine biologists report that sharks are in rapid decline around the world. In the North Atlantic Ocean, shark populations have declined more than 50 percent over the past 20 years alone, with some species now nearing extinction.

Independent Spirit Award Nominees Headline 5th Mid-Valley Video Festival

Both films screen on Friday, February 22nd, one day prior to the Spirit Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

(SALEM, Ore.) - 2008 Spirit Award nominees "Vanaja" and "Quiet City" headline the expanded Mid-Valley Video Festival, which features more than 100 independent films during its nine day run at Northern Lights Theatre Pub, the Historic Grand Theater and Loucks Auditorium February 15th -24th.

New programming includes Future Filmmakers, the Digital Blitz Film Challenge, Videomash and Sustainable Saturday and Sunday. Winners of the festival will be recognized February 24th at the Golden Pioneer Awards Ceremony.

Hillary Clinton Again Lies about Iraq

Many are concerned that if Hillary Clinton is elected president, she will have no qualms about lying once again to the American people in order to justify going to war.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - In Thursday night’s Democratic presidential debate, Senator Hillary Clinton lied again about Iraq. At the forum in Los Angeles, Senator Clinton declared, "We bombed them for days in 1998 because Saddam Hussein threw out inspectors."

That statement was totally false. The bombing campaign had been planned for months and the inspectors were not thrown out. They were ordered out by President Bill Clinton in anticipation of the massive four-day U.S.-led military operation.

Medical Examiner Labels Clackamas Inmate Death a Suicide

Officials at the jail say they are reviewing all policies and procedures pertaining to the occurrence.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - Information from the Medical Examiner in Clackamas County reveals suicide as the cause of death of Brian Hebener in the county jail. Last night, corrections deputies performing routine checks on inmates observed Mr. Hebener in a ligature and immediately began medical care to save his life.

Emergency medical services responded to the jail where medical treatment continued. The valiant efforts of corrections deputies and EMS were unsuccessful. After the passing of Mr. Hebener, the medical examiner was notified and an investigation began, as is normal procedure.
