It's only January, and already the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded is less than 13 cents away from hitting a new record high. At the same time, the price of crude oil has backed down slightly from last week's record of $100 per barrel.

"The price of gas is up a few cents again this week, even though the price of crude oil has backed down slightly from the record $100 per barrel set last week."
A similar avalanche earlier trapped several cars at about 6:00 AM.
(SANTIAM JUNCTION, Ore. ) -
For the second time today, a slide has closed U.S. 20 at mile post 79 near the Santiam Pass. Approximately 80 feet of the roadway was covered with snow. The highway has been CLOSED along the slide area.
No estimate for opening is immediately available. The slide happened shortly after noon about five miles east of the highway's junction with Highway 22, Oregon Department of Transportation officials said.
Another potent storm is on its way for Wednesday.

Weather forecasters report that it will be another day of rain and snow in the Northwest as the latest storm moves in from the Pacific. Over the next several days, the storm track in the west will shift north toward British Columbia.
Rain today will fall along the coast of Washington, Oregon, and northern California before reaching central California by Wednesday. Snow will fall in the Cascades and Intermountain West and will spread into the western Rockies by tonight.
On the right side of the aisle, the campaign's only military veteran, former Vietnam POW John McCain, is seen as the likely winner of the New Hampshire event. Democrats appear to favor Obama.

The spotlight is on the New England state of New Hampshire where the political heat is matched by unseasonably warm weather. Voter turnout is expected to be high as the state holds its much anticipated primary election tonight.
Democratic and Republican candidates are fighting state by state for delegates to this year's party conventions, as the nation prepares to elect a new leader at what many call a crucial time in our national history.
