Independence, Oregon Hygienist Participates in Humanitarian Project in Nepal

Kelly Matthews, RDH, Provides Dental Care for Children.

(INDEPENDENCE, Ore.) - Kelly Matthews and some of her favorite friends Independence-based hygienist Kelly Matthews recently participated in a humanitarian dental clinic held in Kathmandu, Nepal. The clinic was organized by the Himalayan Dental Relief Project which has brought direct dental care to children in Nepal since 2000.

Over the course of 7 days, the clinic served 715 patients, many of whom had never before received dental care.

New Law Would Give Satellite Subscribers Local Oregon News

Smith and Wyden are working to change a law that prevents access.

(Washington, D.C.) - Satellite dish Satellite television subscribers in Wallowa, Grant, Umatilla and Malheur counties would be able to watch Oregon news stations under a new law proposed by Oregon Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden. Subscribers are currently limited to Idaho or Washington broadcasts.

“The Washington State football score isn’t useful when you are rooting for the Ducks or the Beavers,” Senator Smith said. “Our bill will correct the law so local news is local and reports of rain mean reports of rain in your own town. Our goal is to end the frustration faced by satellite subscribers.”

Jefferson Firefighters Assemble and Deliver Christmas Baskets Saturday

Also on Saturday morning, Santa will ride through town on a fire engine, arriving at the Jefferson Community Center at 10:00 AM. He will be handing out candy to all the little visitors.

(JEFFERSON, Ore..) - Jefferson, Oregon firefighters The Jefferson Volunteer Firefighters will once again be preparing and delivering food baskets to those in need living within the Jefferson, Talbot, and Millersburg communities.

Fire District Spokesperson Elaine Parrott says beginning at 8:00 AM this Saturday morning at the Jefferson Fire Station, firefighters will be assembling food boxes, and loading them on fire engines to distribute to those in need within the community.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Brooke Ekins as the SCVA’s new Member and Convention Services Manager in Salem, Oregon The Salem Convention and Visitors Association (SCVA) has hired Brooke Ekins as the Association’s Member and Convention Services Manager.

Ekins’ BA in Speech Communications from Oregon State University will serve her well she said. She will work in a dual role requiring her to assist businesses with marketing opportunities through SCVA’s newly launched membership program. She'll also assist meeting and event planners to ensure their Salem convention, meeting and/or event is a success.

Salem Residents Flee Burning Housefire

Fire investigators are on scene at this time. Traffic on Market Street has reopened.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fire investigation Salem Fire Department responded to a call for a house fire at 2445 Market St NE at 9:35 AM this morning. Multiple calls were reported to 9-1-1 and a second alarm was dispatched at 9:39 AM sending additional resources.

Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says four people were in the residence at the time and they were evacuating as firefighters arrived.

National Report Ranks Oregon 30th in Protecting Kids from Tobacco

Oregon this year will collect $348.5 million from the tobacco settlement and tobacco taxes, but will spend just 2.4 percent of it on tobacco prevention.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Teen smoking Oregon ranks 30th in the nation in funding programs to protect kids from tobacco, according to a national report released today by a coalition of public health organizations.

Oregon currently spends $8.2 million a year on tobacco prevention programs, which is 38.8 percent of the minimum amount of $21.1 million recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last year, Oregon ranked 33rd, spending $3.5 million on tobacco prevention.

Psychologist Says Kids in Oregon`s Disaster Areas Need TLC

An expert says the most important thing to remember is that children depend on the family system for most of their coping ability.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Kid on bleachers The aftermath of Oregon's wind and flood disaster may be affecting children much more than we think, said a disaster psychologist working with the Oregon Department of Human Services.

"Children require special care following a disaster," said Laurel Hughes, Psy. D., who has assisted in more than 50 American Red Cross disaster relief efforts since 1993.
