Rep Thatcher Gets Items Approved for 2008 Session To-Do List

Government Accountability & Volcanoes Win, Immigration Reform Loses.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Representative Kim Thatcher On the final list of bills approved today for the Special Legislative Session in February 2008 were requests by State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, Newberg, St. Paul).

He has been suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis for many years. Many people have expressed amazement in his being alive at all after the traumatic injuries the stuntman suffered and eventually recovered from.

(CLEARWATER, Fla.) - Robert Craig Evel Knievel, Jr. He was a hero to a generation that grew up fascinated with muscle cars and motorcycles, larger than life and the real leader of the pack.

Evel Knievel Jr., legendary motorcycle stuntman, died today in Clearwater, Florida at the age of 69. He will always be remembered for his ability to survive horrendous crashes and his drive, a passionate ambition to always do something no other rider in their right mind would even consider, often with great success.

Skiers Beware! Avalanche Watch in Northern Oregon Cascades

Back country travelers should be very aware of the significantly increasing Avalanche Danger over the weekend and into early next week.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com An Avalanche Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Olympics, Washington Cascades and the Mt. Hood area for Sunday and Monday.

With an already unstable snowpack in place, abundant new snowfall mid-to-late Saturday and Sunday is expected to combine with increasingly strong winds and a warming trend mid-to-late Sunday into Monday, to produce a substantial increase in Avalanche Danger both Sunday and Monday.

Light Snow Showers Could Hit Willamette Valley on Saturday

Rain showers are in the forecast for the 111th civil war between Oregon and Oregon State Saturday in Eugene.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Santiam Pass camera The National Weather Service in Portland, Oregon says a cold low pressure system from British Columbia will spread precipitation over the state this weekend. The precipitation may begin as snow, or a rain and snow mix in the north Willamette Valley and the I-5 corridor.

Snow showers will turn to all rain by Saturday evening.

Inside you will find elevations for cities in the Central and Southern Willamette Valley, as well as elevations for selected Oregon passes.

Wounded Vets Cut off From Old Fashioned Holiday Correspondence

Is the risk of "terror" mail so great that we have to cut out wounded soldiers?

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Walter Reed Army Medical Center officials want to remind everyone that mail addressed to 'Any Wounded Soldier' or 'A Recovering American Soldier' will not be processed, anytime anywhere. Holiday correspondence has been eliminated over apparent fear of terrorist threat.

But I know of no stories of war vets receiving envelopes with white powder, only politicians most of the time. Could it be just another overreaction? The victims, the wounded soldiers and Marines and sailors and airmen probably won't complain much, they are out of sight and out of mind, more now than ever.

Newberg-Dundee Police Catch Alleged Rapist-Kidnapper

A Newberg man was arrested following an investigation into a report he allegedly abducted and attempted to rape a woman.

(NEWBERG, Ore.) - Handcuffs 29-year old Ignacio Benito-Bejarnano, of Newberg, was arrested Wednesday evening, and charged with second degree kidnapping and attempted first degree rape. Second degree kidnapping is a Measure 11 (mandatory minimum) crime. Attempted first degree rape is not.

The investigation began early Wednesday after the woman called police and reported that while driving away from delivering her children to a babysitter, she was confronted by Benito-Bejarnano, who had apparently hid in the back of her van.

The search for the wealthy adventurer Steve Fossett is officially on hold, for now.

(RENO, Nevada) - Legendary aviator Steve Fossett The Civil Air Patrol’s hunt for famed, record-setting aviator Steve Fossett, who vanished on Labor Day during a morning jaunt in Nevada, is the largest and perhaps most expensive in modern-day history.

The 63-year old pilot took off September 3rd for a solo flight from the Flying M Ranch, a posh aviation playground about 70 miles southeast of Reno. Fossett didn’t file a flight plan for the three-hour trip, and he never returned to the ranch.
