Refugee Agency Cautious Over Civilians Returning to War Ravaged Iraq

Some displaced people are returning home, in part because of financial incentives.

(UNITED NATIONS) - U.S. soldier gives out school supplies to kids Responding to recent public reports about refugees returning to Iraq in limited numbers, a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today cautioned against an organized effort to send civilians back to the war-ravaged country.

“We welcome improvements to the security conditions and stand ready to assist people who have decided or will decide to return voluntarily. However, UNHCR does not believe that the time has come to promote, organize or encourage returns,” agency spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis told a press briefing in Geneva.

UN Pledges System-Wide Campaign to Fight Violence Against Women

UN human rights experts say many countries fail to recognize some forms of violence against women as crimes.

(UNITED NATIONS) - Women of Sierra Leone Denouncing violence against women as “one of the most heinous, systematic and prevalent human rights abuses in the world,” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has vowed to lead a campaign against the scourge.

In a message marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated on November 26th, Mr. Ban hailed progress in addressing the issue, but said there is “so much left to do to tear down the veil of tolerance which still sometimes surrounds it.”

Nearly 60 Cars Have Tires Slashed In SE Salem

Police say they are hopeful that a witness can help them identify who is responsible.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Tires slashed Salem Police are hoping a member of the public can help them in identifying the person or persons responsible for slashing tires on nearly sixty cars in southeast Salem Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

The incidents occurred along Fabry Road SE, Woodside Drive SE, Alvina Street SE, Norma Avenue SE, Rockwood Street SE, Baxter Road SE, Tanoak Avenue SE, Ironwood Drive SE, and 10th Street SE.

Body of Missing Silverton Man Recovered

Luke Troseth had been the subject of an ongoing search, officials believe he took his own life.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Luke Troseth, Oregon suicide victim, 11-24-07 A missing Silverton-area man was found deceased Saturday afternoon by divers in the South Falls pool at Silver Falls State Park. Family members reported the man missing to Silverton Police on November 17th, and preliminary investigation indicates no signs of foul play and that he took his own life.

20-year old Luke Troseth has been the subject of a search by Oregon State Parks and Oregon State Police in the area of the park's south falls and surrounding area.

Fire Severely Damages NE Salem Home

Nobody was hurt in the 2:07 PM fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem, Oregon house fire, 11-25-07 A Salem woman was surprised today to learn that a loud boom she heard actually came from her own garage. Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says it happened just after 2:00 PM when the occupant/owner at at 2244 Greentree Drive NE, Michelle Montoya heard a large boom.

"She first thought that it came from down the street so she was looking out her window trying to determine where the boom came from. Her dog started to bark and she went to check what he was barking at. That is when she discovered the fire inside her garage."

California Flames Destroy 49 Malibu Homes

Flea, bass player for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, told the Los Angeles Times that his home had been "burned to a crisp."

(MALIBU, Calif.) - malibu california For the second time in just over a month, fire is racing through the Malibu Canyon, and for the second time, residents were forced to flee. Officials say that as of Sunday morning, the fire was 40% controlled with no further homes in imminent danger.

Forty-nine homes have been destroyed, another 27 damaged, up to 10,000 people evacuated and 4,650 acres burned in the fire which has been determined to have been caused by humans.

Disturbance in Aloha Becomes Deadly Police Shooting

The deputies say the man fired several rounds before they returned fire.

(ALOHA, Ore.) - Police shooting An Aloha man was shot and killed late last night by two Washington County deputies after he reportedly fired at them. Sgt. David Thompson says deputies responded to a call of a disturbance for the second time during the night.

"When they arrived they were confronted by the resident who shot at them multiple times. The deputies returned fire and struck the suspect who later died at the scene," Thompson said.

(HALSEY, Ore.) - Snowy roads Northbound Interstate 5 has reopened following the removal of several crashed vehicles with at least one injury, along a six-mile stretch of the freeway between the Harrisburg (Exit 209) and Sweet Home-Halsey (Exit 216) exits.

Freezing fog and subsequent icy conditions caused a semi truck and its trailer to jackknife across both northbound lanes I-5 about one mile south of the Halsey-Sweet Home interchange (Exit 216) just before 5:00 AM Sunday.

Several vehicles then crashed into the semi, closing northbound lanes.

Aumsville Man Dies in Late Night Crash

No specific road conditions or other factors are being attributed to this single-car accident.

(SALEM, Ore.) - fatal car accident A single car accident claimed the life of an Aumsville man early Sunday morning, just prior to 1:00 AM.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the 6300 block of Culver Drive SE to investigate a single motor vehicle crash, and a short time after arrival on scene, Marion County Fire determined the lone occupant and driver of the vehicle was deceased.
