UN Condemns Latest Murder of Iraqi Journalist

(UNITED NATIONS) - Responding to the mounting death toll of media professionals in Iraq, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization today condemned the killing of Shehab Mohammad al-Hiti, editor of a new Iraqi weekly, al-Youm, who was the latest victim.

Koïchiro Matsuura also condemned the murder of the unnamed chauffeur of a female correspondent of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty whose body was found in Iraq on October 22nd.

Casualties Mounting in Afghanistan as Iraq Death Toll Drops

The death toll in Iraq is at an all time low with only 37 troops killed so far this month. But that figure jumps when Afghanistan is included in the count.

Oregon Receives $1.2 million to Help People With HIV/AIDS

Cascade AIDS Project and Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare will partner with DHS to implement the project.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon Department of Human Services has learned it will receive a $1.2 million federal grant to support persons living with HIV/AIDS who have a co-occurring mental illness.

DHS is one of four applicants nationwide to be selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The three-year competitive grant is through HUD's Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS program.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Two Salem-area men were cited Saturday afternoon for Reckless Driving and Exceeding the Speed Limit in Excess of 100 MPH after an Oregon State Police trooper stopped them for allegedly going 139 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. It happened on a rural county road south of Independence.

Lieutenant Gregg Hastings with OSP says that around 12:50 PM Saturday, OSP Senior Trooper Michael Iwai was operating an unmarked OSP Dodge Charger southbound on Corvallis Road when two motorcycles passed him southbound in a no passing zone on a curve.

Long Days for Firefighters in California (VIDEO)

California Conservation Corps fire crews have been battling the fires since Sunday.

(SAN DIEGO) - Wildland firefighters have accomplished a great deal in recent days, getting a grip on most of the offshore wind driven fires that raged through several Southern California counties.

Three of the significant fires still burning are in San Diego County. The Harris Fire is 90 percent contained. The Witch Fire is 97 percent contained, and the Poomacha Fire is 70 percent contained.

Oregon Senator Joins Demand for More Saudi Accountability

The legislation calls on Saudi Arabia to immediately and unconditionally meet a number of demands.

Oregon`s Average Gasoline Prices are Climbing

The weakening U.S. dollar is a major factor in the price hike experts say.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - "Gas prices continue to climb." AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says, "The national average increased five-and-a-half- cents in the past week to $2.88, And Oregon's statewide average jumps seven cents to $3.07 per gallon this week.

The increase in gas prices comes after crude oil hit a record $93 per barrel Monday."

Iranian Cooperation and Transparency Crucial, UN Says

Iran's nuclear programme has been a matter of international concern since 2003.

(UNITED NATIONS) - "Active cooperation and transparency" on Iran's part are key in resolving outstanding issues over the country's nuclear ambitions, the head of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told the General Assembly Monday.

"If the Agency were able to provide credible assurance about the peaceful nature of Iran's past and currently nuclear programme, this would go a long way towards building confidence, and could create the conditions for a comprehensive and durable solution," IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said at a General Assembly plenary meeting in New York.
