Blackwater Immunity is a Slap in the Face for American Soldiers

The Bush Administration is attempting to steer defense contractor Blackwater out of troubled waters.

(SALEM, Ore.) - If a plan from President Bush goes through, defense contractors from Blackwater will go unpunished for the indiscriminate killings of Iraqi civilians they are accused of. Bush's offer for limited immunity was first reported Monday by The Associated Press.

It is delaying the government's criminal inquiry into the shootings that have strained relations between the U.S. and the Iraqi government.

Tom Potiowsky Named Oregon State Economist

The state economist directs state government's forecasting for tax revenues and budget planning.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Tom Potiowsky will become Oregon's state economist, effective on January 1st 2008, the state Department of Administrative Services announced today.

"Tom brings superb skills to this critical position in state government, as well as great professional integrity and discipline," said Governor Ted Kulongoski.

Keizer Medical Marijuana Case Ignores Oregon Law

The law could not possibly be any clearer or plainer on any reasonable standard.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Anthony Wyatt Beasley probably did not wake up Friday, October 19th 2007 thinking he would be a lightning rod and a focal point in a legal dispute, but that is what he has become. A standard bearer, willing or not, for the medical marijuana law of Oregon and the thousands of card holders in the state.

Beasley is accused of attempting to make hash oil out of marijuana he was growing. Police say he violated the law, but supporters say he was perfectly within his rights, and Keizer may have to pay a price for their reckless law enforcement practices.

Johns Hopkins Study Dubs Reynolds High a Drop Out Factory

School officials say they are addressing their challenges.

(TROUTDALE, Ore.) - Reynolds High School has been called a "Drop Out Factory" by leading researcher, Johns Hopkins University, but officials there say that is not the case.

The Associated Press commissioned a study from Johns Hopkins University, which examined the shrinking enrollment of high school cohorts from freshman to senior years. Schools which enrolled fewer than 60% of the freshman cohort as seniors were dubbed, Drop Out Factories, in the AP release.

Group Fights to Save VA Facility for Injured Soldiers

(MILWAUKEE, Wisc.) - Veterans in Milwaukie are steaming over the proposed parceling of the buildings and grounds of the VA's Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. A group of them have banded together to try and put a halt to the VA's attempts to sell the property off to a commercial developer.

John Lewandowski is one of the military veterans heading the effort to save the place intended to serve as a healing location for veterans of war. "This is hallowed ground, and they want to make a buck off of it, it is wrong."

Did FEMA Name a Fake Press Conference Scapegoat?

Bloggers are suggesting that something may smell fishy, and more people may be accountable for what happened.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Heads are beginning to roll over FEMA's recent "fake" press conference last week. As it turned out, all of the people who appeared to be reporters were actually FEMA employees posing as reporters.

Pat Philbin, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency's External Affairs Director, was slotted to become Director of Public Affairs for National Intelligence. But Philbin lost that appointment today after it was announced that he was the person behind the fake news conference.

Oregon National Guard General Receives the McLain Medal

Rees graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1962 and is a Vietnam veteran.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Maj. Gen. Raymond F. Rees, Adjutant General of the Oregon National Guard, received a prestigious honor when he was awarded the Lt. Gen. Raymond S. McLain Medal for his outstanding contributions to the Army.

Rees accepted the medal in front of 31,000 guests during the opening ceremony of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition at the Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. on October 8th.

Robbery Suspect Had Just Been Released From Jail

Police arrest a robbery suspect hours after she was released from jail on another crime.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore.) - Milwaukie Police responded to a robbery at the Washington Mutual Bank in the 10900 block of SE 21st Monday. A female suspect had robbed the bank of an undisclosed amount of money at 1:00 PM.

Police say the suspect was apprehended at 1:53 PM, walking down SE Harrison. Kevin Krebs with Milwaukie Police, says 21-year old Kelly Jayne Hogan of Milwaukie had just been released from the Clackamas County jail at 11:00 AM on charges of burglary and theft of a business in which she was a former employee.
