Growing Up in Salem, What Happened?

So what is different today? Is the world REALLY that much more dangerous, or is the PERCEPTION of the world just harsher?

(SALEM, Ore.) - When I was growing up, lo these 40 or so years ago, things were very different.

I had my bike and could ride it by myself or with friends anywhere in about a ten mile range. No one feared that as soon as I left my parents' side that I would be kidnapped and, surprisingly, that event never happened.

Off-Duty Officer Shoots, Kills Armed Man (UPDATE)

Both the off-duty police officer and the suspect who was killed, have been identified.

(SCAPPOOSE, Ore. ) - Police are investigating a shooting that involved an off-duty police officer who has now been identified.

According to police the incident began around 2:30 AM, when neighbors called police and said a man, thought to be a prowler, was armed with a handgun and screaming in the street near Northwest Felisha Way and Maria Lane in Scappoose.

Four Arrested in Assault on Juvenile in Milwaukie

Police say all four suspects are charged with a Measure 11 crime.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore.) - Milwaukie Police say an assault on a juvenile that occurred at 8:30 PM Thursday in Dogwood Park, in the 2000 block of SE Lake Road, has led to the arrests of four people.

Kevin Krebs with Milwaukie police says officers responded to a residence where a 17-year-old male juvenile reported that he had been assaulted by 5 suspects while at the park.

Oregon`s Timberline Lodge Welcomes New St. Bernard Puppy

Since 1937, when Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the lodge, St. Bernards have been a part of the alpine landscape.

(MT. HOOD, Ore. ) - Oregon's famous Timberline Lodge is a place of traditions, and one such tradition continues this week with the arrival of Bruno, a new St. Bernard puppy.

For a brief while, the St. Bernard mascots were replaced with Huskies, but records are vague prior to the mid 1950's when the Kohnstamm family took over management of the lodge. Then, since the early 1960's the Lodge has always had St. Bernards named Heidi and Bruno.

U.S. Troops Kill 37 Insurgents; Seize Weapons Caches

Coalition forces killed seven suspected terrorists and detained another during an operation in the Iraqi capital targeting senior al Qaeda leaders.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Iraqi and coalition forces killed 37 enemy fighters, detained four suspects and seized weapons caches in Iraq over the past three days, military officials said.

West of Baqubah today, coalition forces received heavy fire from combatants during an operation targeting a “special groups” commander believed to be associated with members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force.

Elderly Corvallis Man Dies in Crash

The elderly man lost control and slid sideways into the southbound lanes were his car was struck in the passenger side by a southbound 2007 Toyota Camry.

(MONROE, Ore. ) - An elderly Corvallis-area man died Thursday afternoon when he lost control of his car during a heavy hail storm on Highway 99W about five miles north of Monroe and was struck by another vehicle.

New Questions in Sex Case Against Former Salem Cop

New information indicates that a former Salem Police Sergeant while performing an unauthorized investigation of the case, was having sex with an alleged victim.

(SALEM, Ore.) - New information coming to light could strongly affect the way people remember a sex abuse trial against a former African-American police officer in Salem, Oregon.

It appears that a Salem officer investigating the case against Sterling Alexander was also sexually involved with one of the victims, according to an investigation launched by Oregon State Police.

Hiker Survives Fall the Columbia River Gorge‏

The woman sustained a shoulder injury and lacerations to her wrists as a result of the fall. She was rescued by Corbett Fire Thursday after spending the night cold and wet.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - An Ontario woman is fortunate to be alive today, after surviving a long fall down an embankment in the Columbia River Gorge.

Rescuers say 52-year old Chris Kimball went on a short hike alone at about 5:00 PM Wednesday from the Oneonta Falls trail head. The lone hiker took a nap on the trail. When she awoke, she lost her footing and fell 70 feet down a steep embankment near the Oneonta trail foot bridge coming to rest in Oneonta Creek.

The seven-year integrated services contract will commence in September 2008, and includes options to renew for up to three years.

Study Indicates Teen Driving Laws Improve Safety

National study says the extra laws help.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The first six months after obtaining a driver license tend to be the most dangerous for teenage drivers across the nation, but Oregon’s graduated driver licensing program has improved safety since it started in 2000, according to a new study.

“I’m pleased that the Oregon Driver Education program is saving lives and reducing injuries,” said Troy E. Costales, administrator of Transportation Safety at the Oregon Department of Transportation. “The study shows we are succeeding in making our newest drivers better and safer and dramatically reducing the potential negative impacts of teen driving.”
